Aristau: Reuss Landscape and Historic Buildings
Accommodation in Aristau
Aristau is located in the Reuss Valley in the Muri district, between Bremgarten and Muri. The municipality comprises the localities of Aristau, Althäusern and Birri. Fields, forests and protected floodplain landscapes characterize the municipal area; along a short stretch, the Reuss also forms the cantonal border with the canton of Zurich. Two themes therefore stand out when choosing a place to stay: the landscape along the Reuss and the architectural and parish history of the localities.
Landscape, the Reuss and Nature
Around Aristau, hiking and cycling routes pass through fields, forests and the Reuss floodplains, as well as over the surrounding hills. The landscape takes different forms: open fields, forest areas, river floodplains and higher-lying areas are all part of the municipality.
Near Aristau, at Bremegrien, the stones of the bank reinforcement were removed along a 700-metre stretch in 2003, and two islands were created. Since these measures, the Reuss has made the previously monotonous riverbank more varied. In the Reuss flood zone, a shallow backwater was created in 2003 by removing the nutrient-rich topsoil.
The purple moor-grass meadows are also a distinctive feature of nature in Aristau. They are among the most species-rich plant communities on the Swiss Plateau. Depending on local conditions, up to 60 different plants can be found there in an area of less than one are. Various flowers bloom from spring to autumn; flowering conditions can vary from year to year. The best-known flower is probably the Siberian iris, which locals also call the blue Ilge.
Rare bird species breed in Aristau’s nature reserves, including the golden oriole, grasshopper warbler, willow warbler, yellowhammer, reed bunting, and great reed and marsh warblers. Breeding populations can change over time. Those interested in the landscape will find that, alongside the river floodplains, species-rich meadows and diverse habitats are recurring features of the municipal area.
Chapels, Churches and Architectural History
Chapels in the localities recall the history of the municipality; farmhouses and groups of farm buildings continue to shape the settlements today. The rural character is linked to a long agricultural tradition in the Reuss plain, where arable farming and livestock breeding formed the basis of people’s livelihoods. Aristau has had its own parish since 1942.
The Chapel of St. John in the locality of Aristau is the oldest building in the municipality. It bears the date 1521 and is a listed monument. Devotions and church services are held there during the summer months; the chapel is also available for weddings. If you are planning to attend a service or hold a wedding, ask in advance about specific dates and availability.
The parish church of St. Wendelin was built in 1942/43 to plans by the architect Josef Oswald. Bishop Franziskus von Streng consecrated it on 11 July 1943. The church stands on the rising slope above the old village centre and is visible from far away. Inside, masonry made from local tuff stone has been left exposed. As well as its architectural history, the church offers a tangible example of the local use of building materials.
Haus Kapf, at Kapfstrasse 24 in the locality of Waldhäusern, is a Baroque country house built in 1736 as a monastic summer residence. The entire property is protected, including the garden, historic boundary wall, carriage gate, draw well and avenue. Much of the original room layout and interior furnishings have been preserved, including period stucco ceilings, floors and painted canvas wallpapers. This example combines the building’s former use as a country house with a comprehensive view of its protected historic fabric.
Throughout the year, local associations organize village festivals and other events. If one of these dates is important for your trip, ask in advance for dates that fall within your travel period.
