Discover Stetten in the Reuss Valley
Accommodation in Stetten
Stetten lies in the Reuss Valley in the district of Baden, roughly halfway between Baden and Bremgarten. The village has a rural character and a natural setting; 120 of the municipality’s total 441 hectares are forested.
The Reuss landscape and protected areas
The village centre lies on a gently sloping plain, about half a kilometre northeast of the Reuss. The village stream flows into the river in Klosterfeld. The Reuss Bridge at Gnadenthal connects Stetten and Niederwil and provides another direct link to the river landscape.
Several designated protected areas shape the natural surroundings. Reussinsel Risi belongs to Mellingen and Stetten and is part of the Aargau Floodplain Protection Park. The Gnadenthal Islands are also part of the Floodplain Protection Park; they extend across Niederwil and Stetten. Stetten is also home to the Wildenau wetland and Chlosterfeld dry meadow, both designated as nature reserves. The islands and river landscapes thus sit alongside a wetland and a protected meadow as distinct landscape features.
Guided excursions in the Wildenau wetland require the consent of the landowner. This is important to bear in mind if you are planning a guided exploration of the area.
The village’s architectural history
Stetten’s historic buildings can be considered by function and period. St. Vincent’s parish church was built by Hans Baumann between 1881 and 1884. The Old Mill, by contrast, is a former grain mill dating from the 16th century. It is in the lower village at Kirchstrasse 7. Bolzägerte adds another historic landmark: a medieval fortification with a neck ditch. Together, the church, former grain mill and fortification represent different aspects of the village’s history.
Plants, herbs and local offerings
At Bottis Kräutergärtnerei, visitors can explore a warm greenhouse of around 1,500 m² featuring a variety of tropical and exotic plants. Details of this visitor experience may change, so check them before making plans.
Bottipflanzen offers herb courses, guided tours and seminars. Since dates may change, it is a good idea to check for a suitable date before travelling. Organic vegetable farming takes place in Wildenau; agricultural offerings may change. Fresh produce is also offered for sale daily in Wildenau in a public refrigerator by the Reuss. The available selection may vary.
A hiking stage in the wider area
In the wider area around Stetten, Stage 5 of the Aargau Trail runs for 15.4 kilometres from Mellingen to Bremgarten. It is described as a riverside hike along the Reuss. The stage length gives you a specific reference point for planning your trip, and the route can be considered as a hiking option alongside the protected areas and historic buildings.
This gives you a clear choice of interests for planning your trip: you can focus on the Reuss landscape and designated protected areas, explore individual buildings and their history, or include a plant and herb experience. If you are planning a guided excursion in Wildenau, remember that the landowner’s consent is required.
