In Mariestad, the Göta Canal meets Vänern. The town has a 14 Swedish mile-long shoreline on the lake; from here, you can reach Vänern’s 22,000 islands and skerries by boat. There’s plenty to explore on land, too: Gamla Stan and the cathedral showcase architectural history, while lakeside paths and nature reserves offer opportunities to explore the landscape. You can shape your stay around sightseeing, culture or outdoor activities.

Gamla Stan, the cathedral and the theater

Gamla Stan is one of the ten best-preserved town centers in Sweden. Most of its buildings date from the 18th and 19th centuries. A fold-out map highlighting notable houses with information boards is available for a self-guided walk through the old town. Use it to plan your visit around individual buildings and take your time exploring different parts of the historic town center.

Mariestad Cathedral was built between 1593 and 1625. Following restoration between 1903 and 1905, its spire stands 82 meters tall. The church is open to visitors daily; as opening hours may change seasonally, check the latest information before your visit. The 20-bell carillon plays different melodies four times a day, at 09:00, 12:00, 15:00 and 18:00. If you’re planning your visit around a performance, check the current schedule in advance.

Mariestads Teater also combines architectural history with a varied program. The theater building was built in 1842, opened in January 1843 and fully completed in 1848. Mariestads Teater is one of Sweden’s oldest and best-preserved regional theaters and has been protected as a historic building since 1993. The program includes children’s theater and concerts; individual performances vary. In summer, Mariestad Kulturturism offers guided walks through Gamla Stan on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Marieholm and the Vadsbo Museum

For over 350 years, Residenset Marieholm served both as a royal estate and as the governor’s residence, until Skaraborg County was incorporated into the newly formed Västra Götaland County in 1997. Visitors may enter the grounds and stroll through the residence garden; the other buildings are closed. The Vadsbo Museum is centrally located on the island of Marieholm in four wings of the former residence building, two of which are open to the public.

Using historical objects, the Vadsbo Museum’s permanent exhibition traces Mariestad’s development from prehistoric times to the beginning of the 20th century. Another exhibition explores the town’s industrial development through to the present day. The museum offers guided tours for groups of up to 25 people at a cost of SEK 1,400 per group. If you’re planning a tour, confirm the booking conditions in advance.

Lakeside paths, nature and hiking

The shallow shores of Gamla Ekudden, at the mouth of the Tidan, are an important resting place, especially for wading birds. The area’s old, gnarled oaks with their broad crowns are also of great natural value. Walking and cycling paths lead from the guest harbor in Mariestad along the shore to Ekudden Nature Reserve; kayaks are also available to rent at the harbor. The seasonal outdoor Ekudden swimming pool has three different pools. As operating details may change, check the latest information before visiting.

For a hike, the Ekudden–Sandviken trail runs 6 km one way from central Mariestad along Vänern and through the Gamla Ekudden and Sandviken nature reserves. It is marked in orange, but is not suitable for strollers, wheelchairs or rollators. A longer option is Biosfärleden: this 140 km hiking trail follows Vänern’s southern shore between Läckö Castle and Mariestad and is divided into nine stages. It’s suitable for both day hikes and longer, consecutive hikes. To cycle the Mariestad–Lidköping stage of the Vänerleden, start at the guest harbor in the town center; the route follows the existing Biosfär cycling trail.

Events and getting around

Founded in 1928, Karlsholme Folkets Park continues to embody a lively Folkets Park tradition. It hosts music events, a circus school, children’s theater and car shows. A spring market and an autumn market have been held every year since 1985; check the latest dates before your visit. The grounds also include a playground, an outdoor fitness area and picnic spots. Facilities may change.

Direct train services to Mariestad from Gothenburg or Örebro are available on the Kinnekulletåget. Buses from Mariestad run to the excursion destinations of Sjötorp, Torsö and Lugnås. If your plans depend on a particular connection or event date, check the latest travel or event information.
