Lyrestad by the Göta Canal
Accommodation in Lyrestad
Lyrestad can be explored from several perspectives: the history of the Göta Canal, the church, cycling tours and a ski slope whose winter operation may vary. If you are looking for a hotel, the purpose of your trip may be the deciding factor: Would you like to explore cultural history, go cycling or—after checking whether it is operating—go skiing?
On the Göta Canal: Warehouse and Harbor
The canal warehouse in Lyrestad was built in 1823–1824. Lyrestads hembygdsförening later renovated the building and opened a museum there. The construction period and its later use as a museum therefore belong to different chapters in the building’s history.
The quays of a former loading site on the Göta Canal in Lyrestad now serve as a guest harbor for tourist canal boats. The change from its former loading function to today’s harbor operations offers a different perspective on the use of the canal than the warehouse’s use as a museum.
The Church and the History of Telecommunications
Lyrestads kyrka is located just south of the Göta Canal in Lyrestad. It was rebuilt in 1674 on the site and partly on the foundations of a medieval stone church. Its building history therefore extends beyond 1674: the reconstruction builds on an older church site. The church houses a Madonna figure believed to date from the 12th century, one of the oldest in the Diocese of Skara.
The history of telecommunications is another local theme. The building of the former repeater station for the telegraph and telephone line between Stockholm and Gothenburg still stands in Lyrestad. It adds a chapter about communication between the two cities to the history of the canal and the church.
On Foot, by Bike and in Winter
A car-free towpath runs along the Göta Canal near Lyrestad and is suitable for walking and cycling. This means you can choose between two ways of getting around along the canal.
From Lyrestad, you can cycle along the Göta Canal to Sjötorp or Töreboda; both routes pass locks. The route to Sjötorp is shorter, at about 7 km, while the route to Töreboda is around 10 km long. Since distances and route information may change, check the current route before setting out.
There is a ski slope with a lift by the school in Lyrestad. Its operation may vary in winter. If skiing is essential to your trip, check in advance whether it is currently operating.
Harbor Facilities and a Café Break
The guest harbor has 15 berths and 12 electrical outlets at 6 A. Toilets, showers and a laundry room are also available. If you are traveling on a tourist canal boat, these details can help you plan your stop at the harbor.
Hamnmagasinet has a café serving homemade sweet buns and cakes. Check the current opening hours before your visit.
