In Sjötorp, the Göta Canal meets Lake Vänern. This shapes the character of the place as a destination for travelers who want to focus on waterways and their history. Sjötorp has a history of shipbuilding and fishing stretching back several hundred years. Alongside its maritime past, the town is known for its locks, memorials, trails and boating experiences. The range therefore extends from cultural history to activities on foot, by bicycle and on the water.

Canal history and locks

There are eight locks in the town, all within walking distance. The Canal Museum is located in the heart of Sjötorp, just 50 meters from the locks. It showcases the history of the Göta Canal as well as the history of shipping on the Göta Canal, Lake Vänern and Lake Vättern. The proximity of the museum and the locks connects the canal’s engineering with its shipping history. The museum’s themes extend beyond the Göta Canal to include the former shipping on both lakes.

Art and remembrance

The sculpture Vattentrappa by Bengt Olsson stands at Varvsbassängen. It commemorates the 58,000 people who dug the Göta Canal from Sjötorp to Mem between 1810 and 1832. The sculpture gives the story of the canal a concrete human and historical context. The Shipyard Museum is also an attraction in Sjötorp.

The keeper’s house at Sjötorp Lock 1 is now used as a ticket office, where lock keepers welcome canal boaters. Operating procedures may change. If the ticket office is relevant to your plans, check the current arrangements in advance.

On foot, by bicycle and on the water

A hiking trail in Sjötorp, about 9 kilometers long, runs partly along Lake Vänern. A signposted hiking trail leads from Sjötorp to Harnäs Fyr and Surö Bokskog. The Göta Canal Path is a 220-kilometer cycling route along the entire Göta Canal. The information varies depending on the route: the approximately 9-kilometer hiking trail is described by its length and partly lakeside route, while the signposted trail is described by its destinations, Harnäs Fyr and Surö Bokskog. The cycling route, in turn, stretches along the entire canal. There is a bicycle rental service in Sjötorp. A tour operator also offers cycling packages that include a bicycle, accommodation and meals.

On the water, visitors can take a trip out onto the lake from Sjötorp aboard a Vänerslup. The boat Bellevue departs from Sjötorp for a day cruise on the Göta Canal. Vänerslup timetables are seasonal; Bellevue also operates seasonally, and its timetable may change. If you want to include a trip in your day’s plans, check the timetable in advance.

Beach and travel planning

Sjötorp has a bathing beach in the center of town; seasonal conditions may vary. A planned boat trip also means taking seasonal timetables into account when planning your trip.
