Lidköping: Waterfront Paths, Local History and Culture
Accommodation in Lidköping
Lidköping lies on the shore of Lake Vänern. Here, waterfront paths and swimming spots meet museums, art and a historic district. Together with Götene and Mariestad, the town is part of the Vänerskärgården med Kinnekulle UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
On Lake Vänern: Waterfront Paths, Swimming and Paddling
The five-kilometre Strandpromenaden route runs along Lake Vänern from the marina and Framnäs beach park, through Tofta and on to Giacomina. Along the way, paths lead to small swimming beaches that are well suited to swimming and picnics. The shoreline vegetation provides important habitats for birds, amphibians and plants, so the route connects swimming spots with a natural area by the water.
At Framnäs beach park, a long waterfront promenade leads out to a newly built pier. A 150-metre-long jetty reaches into deeper water and is used for swimming. Around a small lake, boardwalks and other piers invite visitors to observe the park’s wildlife and plant life. Framnäsbadet offers another option: a heated outdoor swimming facility on Lake Vänern. It includes a 50-metre pool, diving platforms at three, five and ten metres, a diving board, a 20 × 6 metre pool and a paddling pool.
There are also different activities on the water. Lidköpings kanotförening rents canoes for paddling on the Lidan towards the Flian. SUP boards and kayaks are available to rent at the beach by KronoCamping. Rental arrangements may change, so check the latest information in advance.
Limtorget and the Town’s Museums
Limtorget is Lidköping’s oldest district and the only surviving part of the old town to have escaped the great fire of 1849. The square is home to a printing museum and a craft workshop. The Vänermuseet looks after and displays the Limtorgstryckeriet collection there, with the support of volunteers. Visits to Limtorgstryckeriet can be arranged on request.
The Vänermuseet’s collections span topics ranging from shipping and trade to life in lighthouse communities and the everyday lives of small-scale fishermen. Exhibitions also explore Lidköping’s history and showcase fish species in aquariums. If you prefer to combine history with a walk, you can take the “Personhistoriska platser” (Places of Personal History) tour. It visits places where people featured in the Vänermuseet’s stories about Lidköping have lived.
Art, Design and Local Flavours
Lidköpings konsthall presents exhibitions by local, national and international artists. The programme includes exhibition tours, workshops and other events; check the current programme for specific dates. At the Rörstrand Museum, collections tell a story spanning nearly three centuries. The café serves a locally produced selection of open sandwiches on homemade bread, pastries and seasonal light meals on Rörstrand porcelain. Café offerings may change.
Further afield, you can visit Läckö slott. The castle stands on a promontory in the Eken archipelago on Lake Vänern and has a castle garden. At Spikens Fiskehamn on Kållandsö, you can find freshly smoked Vänern fish, sea fish from the inland lake, value-added products, delicacies and vendace roe. These two destinations offer different highlights: the castle and garden on the one hand, and fishing and regional products on the other.
Nature and Trails in the Surrounding Area
The Östra Sannorna Nature Reserve is right next to the town and offers opportunities for hiking and swimming. A boardwalk trail runs through the reserve, with information boards and a birdwatching tower along the route. Villa Giacomina offers a different landscape: this 18th-century English landscape park is characterised by winding paths, streams, bridges and a summerhouse. Most of the park’s woodland is open and easy to walk through.
Råda Ås is about five kilometres from the town centre. This recreation area has hiking trails, running and exercise tracks, an outdoor fitness area and a viewpoint. For a longer hike, the approximately 13-kilometre, blue-marked Traneberg trail runs from Läckö Golf along the shore through a range of natural habitats and varied terrain. Families can visit animals and experience farm life at the stadsnära lantgård in Råda.
Planning Your Trip
The Municipality of Lidköping has approximately 95 kilometres of combined walking and cycling paths. Four main cycling routes connect the town’s districts with the centre. To travel to Spiken, Västtrafik bus route 132 connects Lidköping with the village and serves the Spiken stop; check the latest timetable before travelling. When looking for a hotel, let your plans for each day guide your choice: the promenade and Framnäs offer waterside walks, Limtorget and the museums are about local history and culture, while Östra Sannorna and Råda Ås add nature trails to your itinerary.
