Sunnersbergs kyrka is located on Kålland, about nine kilometres northwest of Lidköping. Standing high on a hill, its tall, slender spire is visible across the landscape. Its history dates back to the Middle Ages; pilgrim and cycling routes, along with other historical traces, add to the character of the area.

Church history through the centuries

The oldest parts of Sunnersbergs kyrka date from the late 12th century. The church took on its present appearance in 1869. Several centuries of building history separate its earliest sections from its later form—a fascinating point of interest for anyone interested in historic architecture.

The furnishings also reflect different periods. The pulpit dates from the 17th century; Count Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie financed and donated it in the 1670s. The altarpiece depicts Christ’s body being carried by angels and is probably a work by Anthonis van Dyck, painted in the 1620s. A preserved double lily stone is kept in the entrance hall. The churchyard contains several older tombstones and a brick-built storage shed dating from 1746.

Historical traces on Kålland

Another part of the region’s cultural history is Riddaregårdens väderkvarn. The millwright Anders Bruto Göte built it in 1879, originally for Janne Jansson at Holma farm in the parish of Sunnersberg. The windmill is a prominent landmark along the road between Lidköping and Läckö Castle. Exploring the area brings you both the church’s architectural history and a striking witness to the history of milling.

To see more historic objects, you can include the Västergötland Museum in your wider regional itinerary: ten of the 18 Fröslundasköldarna are on display there. The collection offers an additional cultural stop alongside the traces directly connected with Sunnersberg and Kålland.

Pilgrim routes and getting your bearings

The Pilgrimsled Kålland pilgrim route runs from central Lidköping to Läckö on Kållandsö and passes, among other places, by Sunnersbergs kyrka. It is about 46 kilometres long in total and forms part of the Pilgrimsled Skaraborg route. It is marked with the St. Olof’s Cross. Sunnersberg Medieval Church is listed as stop 8 on the Kållandsövägen tourist route.

There is also a simple pilgrim path at Kyrkskolan; check the trail conditions before using it. Several sleeping places, toilets and showers are listed for Kyrkskolan Sunnersberg. Confirm availability before including them in your overnight plans.

A different perspective on a cycling tour

Historiska Kålland is a 34-kilometre cycling tour that mainly follows smaller, lightly trafficked country roads. The starting point at the Lidköping travel centre is accessible by train or bus; check current timetables when planning your journey. Further afield in the region, the tour passes through cultural and historical landscapes. Along the route, there are opportunities to take detours into nature and go swimming in Lake Vänern.

The two routes suit different plans: Historiska Kålland is described as a 34-kilometre cycling tour, while Pilgrimsled Kålland is a pilgrim route of about 46 kilometres in total. Their type of tour is another difference, in addition to their length. If you are planning a hotel stay, you can first decide whether to focus on church history, pilgrimage or cycling, then arrange your other plans accordingly.

Farm shop and local produce

For a stop with a regional focus, the Läckö Kött farm shop, Gårdsbutiken, is located at Sunnersberg Backa 3, 53198 Lidköping. In addition to its own meat, it sells other locally produced goods from regional suppliers. Along with the historic sights and routes, the farm shop adds an insight into local produce to your trip.
