Discover Spiken: Harbor, Fishing and Lake Vänern

Spiken is a destination shaped by its fishing harbor, food and activities on the water. There are several aspects to consider when choosing a stay: alongside the inland fishing harbor, the harbor also has a guest marina; local culinary specialties include freshly smoked fish and seasonal Vänern vendace roe. Trails and tours round out the picture. You can plan your time around fishing culture, outdoor activities or nearby attractions.

Getting there and the surrounding area

Västtrafik bus route 132 runs year-round between Lidköping and Spiken. Timetables can change, so check your connection before you travel. Läckö Castle is close to Spiken and rises on a cliff jutting into Lake Vänern. This striking landmark connects the area with the lake and offers a cultural attraction of its own nearby.

There is also a connection between the two places for cyclists: you can ride between Spiken and Läckö Castle on the first completed section of the Läcköleden trail. A municipal route update was published on July 27, 2026; later sections may change. When planning, it is therefore important to distinguish the described first section from other stages of the route.

Fishing harbor and water

Spiken’s inland fishing harbor is one of the largest inland fishing harbors in Europe. Spiken is also one of the most active fishing areas on Lake Vänern. A well-equipped guest marina is located within the fishing harbor. The village also has a boat ramp and a bathing jetty. Together, these facilities showcase different aspects of the harbor: fishing, boating and spending time by the water.

The Läckö–Spiken paddling tour has good launch sites for visitors with their own canoe or kayak. If you’re interested in fishing, you can fish freely in Spiken with hand-held gear, both from shore and from a boat. Check the current rules before fishing. Fish, crafts and seasonal offerings

Freshly smoked fish is sold in Spiken. Availability and opening hours vary by vendor. Vänern vendace roe is also available while supplies from that year last; supply is seasonal. If you’re looking for a particular specialty, it’s a good idea to check availability and opening hours in advance.

Local artisans offer items including rag rugs, clothing, ceramics, art, jewelry, wirework, skincare products and their own spice blends. Local retail offerings may change over time. Several restaurants and cafés serve food right by the water; current venues and menus may also change.

In autumn, visitors can take guided tours connected with the traditional fishing of Vänern vendace roe. Check current tour dates before planning your trip around them. When Artur came to Spiken, he told his landlords how they handled vendace roe, the roe of the European vendace, in Kalix.

More trails on Kållandsö

On Kållandsö, a roughly four-kilometer trail winds through forest and over rocks. Along the way, it offers lovely views of Lake Vänern and Läckö Castle. The approximate length and the described sections provide useful guidance if you’d like to include a hike in your trip.
