Åmål combines a long urban history with cultural venues, hiking trails and the shores of Lake Vänern. The town of Åmål lies along the long stretch of coastline that extends across the eastern part of Åmål Municipality. Founded in 1643, Åmål developed into an important trading and shipping town. Today, you can discover this historic side in old houses, churches and museums; outdoor trails and seasonal events add other dimensions to your trip.

Historic Sites and Architecture

Gamla Staden survived the great fire of 1901. Houses from the 18th and 19th centuries preserve the character of an old town there. Gamla Kyrkan dates back to 1669 and is now used for music, literary days, art and lectures. Plantaget is also worth a look: the park and surrounding buildings form one of Sweden’s best-preserved 18th-century settings.

Vågmästargården, built in 1714, stands at the inner end of the guest harbour. Its annex houses Nordiska Litteraturhuset. Among other things, it is home to Bokdagar i Dalsland and Dalslands Litteraturförening; Bokdagar i Dalsland, author evenings and other activities are also planned there. The combination of a historic building and a literary event venue makes this a special stop for literature enthusiasts.

Åmåls Hembygdsmuseum is housed in a harbour warehouse dating from the late 18th century. It presents historic settings across three floors. Hantverksmagasinet focuses on handicrafts and exhibitions: visitors can see textiles, woodwork and metalwork, ceramics, and jewellery. Snarhögsgården was moved to Örnäspark in 1931 and has rooms furnished in the style of the period. It is run by Hembygdsmuseum; contact the museum to arrange a visit.

Culture and Seasonal Experiences

Lectures, exhibitions and reading sessions take place at Åmåls Kulturhus. The venue also includes a library, an art gallery and Europa Direkt Fyrbodal. Åmåls Blues Fest is one of Åmål’s main annual events. Dates and programmes change each year, so it is worth checking the latest festival information before your trip. This lets you plan your trip around the events that interest you most.

Tollebols kvarn also offers seasonal activities: in summer, guided tours and family activities are available, including cycling tip rounds. There is also a museum and a summer café. If you plan a visit, bear in mind that these offerings are tied to the summer season and may change.

Hiking Trails and Outdoor Activities

For a walk in Åmål, Hälsans stig is a signposted 3-kilometre route. At Hanebol friluftsområde, options range from a marked forest trail to seasonal activities: Skogsslingan is 7.4 kilometres long. In summer, the area is suitable for running, walking and picnicking; in winter, skiing and sledding are possible, depending on conditions. Cycling is permitted on three designated route sections.

At 20 kilometres, Storspåret is considerably longer. The hiking trail starts in Hanebol near Åmål and ends in Edsleskog, where it connects to the Pilgrim Trail. It is signposted; a bus service connects Åmål and Edsleskog for the route. Check the timetable before your trip. The different trail lengths help with planning: Hälsans stig is a shorter walking route, while Storspåret is a longer hike.

Kungsberget is in the centre of Åmål and is both a viewpoint and a park, offering views over the town. Around 30 forested islands in Tösse Skärgård belong to Åmål Municipality. There are opportunities for paddling, camping and hiking there. Tösse Skärgård also includes three preserved 19th-century croft sites that are open to the public.
