Ånimskog lies in the southernmost part of Åmål Municipality, about 20 km south of the main town along the E45. Nature and cultural history shape the destinations: these include the archipelago landscape of Yttre Bodane on Lake Vänern, the Sörknatten and Baståsen hiking areas, and Ånimskog Church with its historic furnishings.

Archipelago, forests and hiking trails

Yttre Bodane is a forested archipelago landscape on Lake Vänern, as well as a hiking trail and nature reserve. It is home to eleven Bronze Age coastal cairns of national significance. The landscape and prehistoric traces thus come together in the same place.

Sörknatten also connects nature and culture: the nature reserve is a mountainous, forested area with a hiking trail. Much of the film Ronja the Robber's Daughter was filmed around Mount Sörknatten. The Sörknatten Trail is 6.5 km long. The Baståsen Trail is about 6 km long; part of it runs alongside Lake Ärr.

Baståsen Nature Reserve consists of a steep slope that extends down to Lake Ärr and is covered in deciduous forest. Baståsen is one of Dalsland's richest sites for land snails and other terrestrial molluscs: 32 snail species and five different slug species have been recorded. Alongside its forested slope, this gives the area an ecological dimension.

Yttre Bodane is well suited to kayaking. A launch site is located about 400 m south of the car park. Lake Ånimmen is considered one of the municipality of Åmål's most fish-rich lakes. At the Stora Strand bathing area, the walk from the campsite car park is about 500 m and goes through the forest. Another bathing area is at Lake Furusjön, near Ånimskog.

Church and historical traces

The oldest parts of Ånimskog Church were probably built towards the end of the 13th century. The baptismal font also dates from the 13th century; it was made from sandstone quarried near Kinnekulle. The interior is characterised by a provincial Baroque style from the 18th century. The painted wooden ceiling was created in 1739 by Hans George Schüffner. The sculptor Nils Falk made the altarpiece in 1729; the pulpit is also his work. A panoramic view of the church shows its exterior and interior.

Four passage graves, known as hällkistor, have been documented on the historic lands of Ånimskog. The hällkista at Byn is on private property; please park in the designated space. The Årbol School Museum offers another way to explore local history, with a collection of 6,000 schoolbooks from different periods.

Planning your stay

Ånimskog has, among other things, bus connections to Åmål. If you are planning to travel by bus, check the timetable for your travel date. When choosing excursions, you can distinguish between the places described by interest: Yttre Bodane combines archipelago scenery and kayaking, while Sörknatten and Baståsen offer specific hiking trails and different landscape features. The church art and hällkistor complement these nature-focused attractions with historical sites.
