When planning a trip to Tösse, you can choose from several main attractions: the Tösse archipelago, Sandvarpet beach, a section of the Landsbygdsleden cycling route and two churches with their own histories. The planning considerations differ accordingly. Exploring the entire archipelago requires access to a boat or canoe; for cycling, the length and terrain of a specific section are relevant. Sandvarpet combines a beach with facilities, while the churches offer different historical perspectives. This can help you decide in advance whether nature, cycling, the beach or culture should shape your stay.

Tösse archipelago: islands and access by water

The Tösse archipelago comprises about 30 islands and is the largest archipelago in Vänern, in Dalsland. Anyone wishing to experience the entire archipelago needs access to a boat or canoe. This requirement shapes the planning: the number of islands gives an idea of its size, while access to a boat or canoe is essential for experiencing the whole area. If you want to make this natural setting the focus of your trip, consider access by water early in your plans.

Sandvarpet and Tösse hamn

Sandvarpet is a sandy beach surrounded by forest. The beach has a bathing jetty, toilets, a playground and a barbecue area. This brings together the character of the beach and specific facilities in one place: sand and forest define the surroundings, while the bathing jetty and other amenities add practical considerations for a beach visit. Unlike the archipelago, where access to a boat or canoe is necessary to experience the whole area, Sandvarpet can be considered as a destination in its own right, based on its beach features and facilities. There is a parking area at Tösse hamn.

Cycling on the Landsbygdsleden

The Landsbygdsleden cycling route includes a 9-kilometre section on gravel roads that is very hilly in places and passes through a large forest area towards Tösse. The distance refers to this section of the route. For planning, you can consider its length, surface and terrain together: the section is 9 kilometres long, runs on gravel and has steep hills in places. Road conditions may change, so check them before setting out. Unlike the archipelago, the cycling option can be assessed in terms of a specific route section with a defined surface and terrain.

Tösse kyrka and Tösse gamla kyrka

Tösse kyrka is about 45 metres long and one of the largest churches in the diocese. It was consecrated on 5 November 1848. Its length gives an impression of the building’s scale, while the date places its consecration in time. Tösse gamla kyrka has a different historical story: it was taken out of use in 1812, sold in 1832 and, after renovation, reconsecrated for religious use in 1961. The two church histories highlight different aspects: Tösse kyrka is notable for its scale and year of consecration, while Tösse gamla kyrka is notable for its change of use and later reconsecration. Those interested in church history can consider these perspectives separately.
