Nyland between the river mouth and industrial history

Nyland is located where the Ångerman River flows into a deep sea inlet. Just outside the harbour is the island of Lilla Norge, formed from ballast sand carried by Norwegian ships. Its origins are a reminder of the shipping industry. The quay is also home to Hamnmagasinet, a historic, white-painted building. The river mouth, island and warehouse offer different ways to explore Nyland’s landscape and history.

Historic buildings and local history

During its heyday in the 19th and 20th centuries, Nyland was the most developed industrial community in Ådalen. Several typical light-coloured wooden houses from Ådalen’s sawmill and railway communities have been preserved along Köpmangatan, Nyland’s former main street. The former courthouse has also been preserved in Nyland. Together, these buildings offer different insights into the area’s history, from characteristic wooden architecture to the former courthouse.

Ytterlännäs Gamla kyrka, close to Nyland, is located between Bollstabruk and Nyland; signs for the access road are posted along Route 333. The stone church dates from the 13th century. Its vaults and lime paintings date from the 15th century, and its wooden interior has been fully preserved since the 18th century. The building’s history thus brings together different periods in a single structure. The church offers guided tours, a café, exhibitions, a children’s art studio, and a church trail with a quiz walk.

Hiking and cross-country skiing

There is a car park for the Nyland hiking route above the ski slope at the cross-country ski centre. Antons stig starts at the car park and is about 500 metres long. The detour along Antons stig to Nylandsberget offers a sweeping view of Nyland and the Ă…ngerman River. When choosing a route, you can consider this short walk to the viewpoint separately from the cross-country skiing options.

The cross-country ski trails near Nyland are 2.5 and 5 kilometres long. They start at Nylandsberget and Slalombacken, respectively. Their lengths give you a concrete comparison with Antons stig: the hiking route is about 500 metres long, while both ski trails are considerably longer. Hiking and cross-country skiing therefore differ both in activity and distance.
