Mjällom: Viewpoints and Industrial History
Accommodation in Mjällom
If you’re looking for a hotel in Mjällom, the area’s highlights can help you tailor your stay to your interests: viewpoints, hiking trails, and more than a century of industrial history. The landscape and local history offer different points of interest.
Views and Nature Reserves
At the summit of Högklinten, a circular hiking trail offers beautiful views and several rest spots. From Högklinten, the view stretches from Örnsköldsvik in the north to Härnösand in the south. The Högklinten Nature Reserve can be reached from the parking area via a footpath almost two kilometers long; the parking area is on the road from Nordingrå to Mjällom.
The Norrfällsviken Nature Reserve has a viewing platform overlooking the Bådamalen shingle field. There is also an archaeological site with 14 stone cairn graves, most of which date from the Bronze Age. The views and archaeological traces offer two different reasons to explore this nature reserve.
Hiking Trails and Distances
For the Mjällom–Omne section, the upper route is listed as 16.4 kilometers and the lower route as 15.5 kilometers. The difference between the two route lengths is 0.9 kilometers. The lower option passes the Mjällomviken Motor Museum. Depending on the route you choose, the section is rated moderate to challenging; the difficulty can also vary with trail conditions.
Trail conditions and markings can change. If you plan to hike this section, check them before setting out. Another specific walking time: the footpath from the parking area to Bredviksstugan takes about 30 minutes.
Industrial History and Kulturfabriken
Mjällom has been an industrial community for more than 100 years. The exhibition at Kulturfabriken Höga Kusten is housed in Ivar E Norlin’s former shoe factory. The building is a monument to the time when Mjällom was a center of shoe manufacturing in Sweden. The Kulturfabriken museum presents the history of industry, sawmills, fishing, and agriculture.
Every summer, various local artists and craftspeople exhibit their work at Kulturfabriken Höga Kusten. Together with the factory’s former use, this offers another perspective on local cultural history. Keep the season in mind when planning your visit: the exhibitions are held in summer.
Engines and Flatbread
The Motormuseet i Höga Kusten houses one of northern Sweden’s largest collections. It includes boats, stationary engines, hot-bulb engines, and outboard motors. The oldest engine in the collection dates from 1903. Thus, alongside shoe manufacturing, Mjällom’s industrial history also extends into the history of technology and engines.
Mjälloms Tunnbröd also originated in Mjällom: Sweden’s oldest flatbread bakery began in a small bakehouse in the area and later moved to Ullånger. For several decades, the flatbread bakery and shoe manufacturing provided employment. This history adds a local food tradition to the museum’s themes.
