Ör Church and its building history

Ör Church is a medieval church in its original Late Gothic style, which has been extended several times. In the 19th century, it received a Neoclassical tower. This makes two aspects particularly clear for understanding its architecture: the original Late Gothic style and the later design of the tower. The extensions also show that the building cannot be reduced to a single construction phase.

Ör Church was first mentioned in written sources in 1273. This year marks the reference, not necessarily the year it was built. It may have been a stave church at that time. Its early history thus combines a specific date with an open question about its form at the time: the possibility that it was a stave church remains just that—a possibility—while the later building phases are outlined by the extensions and the Neoclassical tower.

Lake Helgasjön: protected area, bathing spot and wooded slope

Galtö Nature Reserve lies in Örfjorden, in the northwestern part of Lake Helgasjön. It can be reached by boat, canoe or kayak, as well as over safe winter ice. For trip planning, this makes the means of access a concrete distinction: access by watercraft is available alongside a winter option that depends on the ice being safe to cross.

Svanebro bathing spot offers a different connection to the lake. It is northeast of Ör, on the road towards Åby, in the northwestern part of Lake Helgasjön; its stretch of beach faces south. Compared with Galtö, the focus here is on the bathing spot’s location and the beach’s orientation, while Galtö is characterized by its means of access. These are different points to consider when comparing the protected area and the bathing spot according to their respective features.

Örhöjden also has its own nature theme: its slope is covered by mixed beech and spruce forest. A goldcrest has also been recorded at Örhöjden. The combination of forest type and bird occurrence gives this place a different focus from Svanebro’s beach or access to Galtö Nature Reserve.
