Get to know Jät through three main themes: churches, manor and village history, and Åsnen, with its bathing area, observation tower and route. For planning your trip, it is helpful to distinguish between them: the churches and cultural landscape tell the story of the area, while the bathing area, hiking trail and Åsnen Runt offer different connections to nature and routes.

Churches from different periods

Jät’s old church is a Romanesque medieval stone church built in 1226. Its well-preserved Baroque interior adds another historical layer to the building: the Romanesque style and Baroque elements represent different periods. The church is used for services in summer and is also a popular wedding church. It is a side trip along the Åsnen Runt route.

Jät’s new church was built in the early 20th century in the Art Nouveau style and has a distinctive yellow-brown façade. Comparing it with the older stone church reveals two clearly distinct periods of construction and styles. If you are interested in church architecture, Jät offers more than just one historic building.

Manor landscape and early local history

Jät is a cultural landscape of national significance. The manor landscape of Jätsberg contrasts with the agricultural landscape around the village community of Östra Jät. The Jätsberg estate was established in 1664 by merging two noble farms in the village of Berg; the manor house was built around 1800. These two dates mark different historical milestones: the founding of the estate and the later construction of the manor house.

Jätsholm, the medieval seat, was first mentioned in writing in 1354. It stood on Bramsholme, a projecting island in Åsnen. Parts of a house foundation remain at the former site of Jätsholm. The site’s history thus connects an early written mention with a specific historic place in the lake landscape.

The deserted village of Västra Jät includes house foundations, stone walls and the course of the path between the village square and the manor complex. Three Iron Age burial grounds add to the traces of earlier settlement. The stone cairn Locka rör is 22 metres in diameter; according to local tradition, it is associated with the buried body of the giant Loke. The stone bridge over the Aggån is also of interest from the perspective of communications history.

Åsnen, bathing area and routes

Jät’s bathing area on Åsnen is family-friendly, with large open spaces and shallow water. There is also a permanent bathing jetty. Check the jetty’s condition before your visit. The bathing area is also a spot for observing migratory birds in the Åsnen region.

The Jäts byalag hiking trail leads to an observation tower with a wide panorama of the lake and its islands. Beyond the tower, the trail reaches coniferous forests and flower-rich pastures. Åsnen Runt is on a different scale: the signposted route is approximately 140 kilometres long. The hiking trail leads to a specific viewpoint and the landscapes beyond it; for Åsnen Runt, the approximate route length is an important planning guide.
