Ingelstad combines a rich cultural history with a landscape shaped by water and movement. If you’re looking for a hotel in Ingelstad, historic sites, activities on Torsjön and weather-dependent winter activities may appeal to different travel interests.

Inglinge hög and the History of the Region

The Iron Age burial ground Inglinge hög is located in Ingelstad and includes around 130 ancient monuments. Inglinge hög is Småland’s largest burial mound; the largest mound is 37 metres in diameter and 6 metres high. Every year, an all-day festival is held at Inglinge hög in memory of King Inge.

The wider history is also complex: Ingelstad became a kind of power centre during the Iron Age. The Ingelstad–Torsås–Torsjö area has been continuously inhabited since the Stone Age, and traces of its long history across several eras are clearly visible in the landscape. The historical perspective therefore ranges from the specific Iron Age burial ground to a settlement history encompassing the wider area.

Östra Torsås Church and Cemetery

Östra Torsås Church stands on the southern edge of Ingelstad, where country roads intersect. It was built in the 1840s in the Neoclassical style and inaugurated in 1852. Östra Torsås Cemetery has a thousand-year history. The church and cemetery thus offer different historical perspectives: the 19th-century history of the building and a much longer history of the cemetery.

Torsjön, Greenway and Bathing Spots

The southern tip of Torsjön reaches into the centre of Ingelstad. Between Sikabacken and the centre, Smalspåret runs along the lake as a paved greenway. Smalspåret is part of the Sydostleden long-distance cycling route, which runs between Växjö and Simrishamn. This distinguishes the local description of the greenway from its place within a long-distance cycling route.

On the western shore of Torsjön, there is a promenade with a playground, benches and a bathing spot. Sikabacken is a bathing spot on Torsjön; it has a floating jetty, a toilet and changing rooms. A 1.3-kilometre illuminated fitness trail also starts at Sikabacken. The lakeshore therefore offers both facilities for bathing and opportunities for exercise.

Waterways and Outdoor Activities

The Skyeån flows through the cultural landscape behind Ingelstad school. Canoeing takes place on the Skyeån and Torsjön. The waterways at Hanefors were restored in 2019–2020; since then, there has been a flowing watercourse bordered by wetlands and forest. The waterways at Hanefors therefore offer a different landscape from Torsjön and its shores.

For winter activities, Prästabacken is another option: the slope is used for skiing and sledging in Ingelstad and has a drag lift. Its operation depends on the weather. If you include Prästabacken in your travel plans, you should take this condition into account.
