Kalvsvik combines a neoclassical church, a varied agricultural landscape and a hiking route focused on nature and culture. From the church, you can look out over the landscape typical of Kalvsvik, all the way to the waters of Lake Åsnen. Archaeological traces and buildings at the local heritage farm add to the picture of a place whose landscape and history are closely linked to agriculture.

Church, Cultural Landscape and the Past

Kalvsvik Church was built in 1851–1852 as a traditional neoclassical parish church, based on plans by Fredrik Wilhelm Scholander. There is a ramp at the main entrance, and the church also has an accessible toilet and a hearing loop. From here, you can see Kalvsvik’s characteristic agricultural landscape, with the waters of Lake Åsnen visible beyond.

Kalvsvik is designated as a cultural environment of county-wide interest. It illustrates the early development of a parish centre and the long-term evolution of the agricultural landscape. Archaeological remains consist mainly of stone cists and stone cairn graves from the Stone and Bronze Ages. Alongside the more recent history of the church, they connect your visit with earlier periods.

Kalvsviksfjorden shapes the landscape, which includes pastures, coniferous and deciduous forests, and marshes. The landscape around the fjord is relatively flat. The agricultural landscape features a continuous field pattern across two low ridges: one lies west of the built-up area, near the lake, and the other to the east. Marshes and bogs can be found along the western shore of Kalvsviksfjorden.

Hiking Route with Nature and Culture Themes

The Kalvsvik hiking route passes through mixed woodland, marshes, pastureland and shoreline areas, as well as across the open waters of Lake Åsnen. Information boards cover topics including birds, dragonflies, flowers, folk healers, ancient monuments and Nöjda-Sven’s fishing spot. The route offers a range of encounters with nature and local culture.

The starting point is at Bygdegård, where parking is available. A 500-metre detour from the route leads to a restored Stone Age stone cist. If you would like to focus your outing on archaeological traces, you can include this detour as a separate part of the hike.

Another destination is Nöjda-Sven’s cottage, a small croft with three stone walls and one wooden wall. The adventurer and tin-worker Sven Nöjd lived there from the late 19th century until the early years of the 20th century. Following several renovations, the cottage has become a popular excursion destination.

Kalvsvik’s local heritage farm includes a Ryggåsstuga (a traditional Swedish cabin), a soldier’s cottage, a barn, a hay shed and other buildings. Coffee is served occasionally in the heritage farm’s coffee house; check in advance for visitor arrangements and opening hours. By prior arrangement, the Kalvsvik local heritage association can welcome groups for guided tours and coffee.

Bathing Area on Lake Åsnen

Kalvsvik’s bathing area on Lake Åsnen has a sandy beach and a barbecue area. Facilities also include a jetty, tables and benches, a children’s swing, a changing cabin and a toilet; parking is available too. If any particular facilities are important for your plans, check the details before your visit.

Signs to the bathing area are posted at the church; it lies 1.5 kilometres to the south along a narrow paved road. In the surrounding region, a swim at Kalvsvik beach can be combined with a visit to the part of Lake Åsnen designated as a national park. Check the national park’s access conditions separately.
