Västervik offers several ways to shape your travel plans: medieval history, maritime museum topics and activities on the water. Which of these interests you most can help determine the focus of your stay.

History and architecture

Stegeholm Castle Ruin originally served a specific protective purpose: it guarded the entrance to the bay and to the medieval merchant settlement of Västervik. Today, the ruin hosts the Visfestivalen every year. This brings together historical significance and a recurring cultural event in one place.

The medieval S:ta Gertruds kyrka is located in Västervik on Hälleberget. Its construction history spans several distinct periods: the choir and sacristy were built in the 1430s, the nave around 1450, and the tower around 1670. At Unos Torn, two measurements refer to different things: the tower is 18 metres high, and its viewing platform is 34 metres above sea level.

Museums and maritime topics

The exhibitions at Västerviks Museum cover stories from the 16th century to the present day. At Sjöfartshallen, visitors can learn more about Västervik’s maritime history, adventures, ships and shipping companies. This gives you several ways to explore the city’s history, rather than limiting your museum visit to a single chapter.

The exhibition BOATMAN – the maritime heritage presents Tjustökor built using the clinker boat-building method classified by UNESCO. It also explores how cultural heritage is preserved and safeguarded for the future. Exhibition status and displays may change, so check in advance what will be on show during your visit. A bookable VR experience lets you discover the ship Mars Makalös up close. Check availability before your trip.

The Psykiatriska museet in Västervik offers a different perspective on the past. It preserves one of the few remaining institutions from the now-closed world of psychiatric care. Västerviks Museum also offers a guided city walk exploring the history of the city, its buildings and its residents. Find dates and prices in the museum’s events calendar.

Archipelago and routes on the water

Naturum Västervik focuses on the sea and the archipelago. Boat connections to the islands are also relevant when planning your trip: smaller boats run year-round from Västervik to the islands of the archipelago, with larger boats operating in summer as well. As seasonal services may vary, it is worth checking the timetable for your intended travel date.

You can start kayaking in the city and paddle north along Gamlebyviken. Another option is the Gamlebyviken runt route: you can start in Västervik or Gamleby, and the full circuit of the bay is 41 kilometres long. The starting points and total distance help distinguish this route from a paddle northward.

The 12-kilometre Gränsöleden also runs around the nature reserve on the Gränsö peninsula, near Västervik. This gives you different ways to get around: a guided city walk, paddling routes with different directions and distances, and a boat connection to the islands.
