Gamleby combines a distinctive local history with striking churches and a rare triangular market square. There are also cultural events, the Gamleby Xrundan and seasonal activities at Tjustvallen. This offers a range of options for planning your visit: history and architecture, cultural events, a walk or sports at a particular time of year.

History and Churches

Gamleby is located where the town of Västervik stood until 1433. Gamleby’s triangular market square is one of only a few in all of Sweden. Here, a historic connection to the area meets a distinctive feature of the square’s shape. If you are interested in Gamleby’s history, both details offer different points of reference: Västervik’s former location and the unusual geometry of the market square.

Gamleby Church was inaugurated in 1837 and has several historic furnishings worth seeing. St. Gertrude’s Church offers a different perspective on time and architecture: it was a towerless stone building that was in use from the 12th century onward. The churches thus trace the area’s history from use beginning in the 12th century to the inauguration of Gamleby Church in the 19th century.

Culture and Events

Gamleby Kulturhus is now a lively meeting place for culture, creative work and various events; concerts are also held there. Dances are held every year at Gamleby Folkpark. The two venues offer different reasons to visit: cultural activities and events are the focus at Kulturhus, while Folkpark hosts annual dances.

Gamleby Xrundan and Garpedansberget

The Gamleby Xrundan is approximately 3.2 kilometres long and runs on asphalt. It starts at the intersection by the cemetery and the town-centre car park. This gives you the approximate length, surface and starting point for planning. The stated length is an estimate, and route conditions may change. Check them before setting off so your plans take current conditions into account.

Garpedansberget is in Gamleby and is 70 metres high. The mountain’s height is a different point of reference from the Xrundan’s approximate length: one is an elevation, the other the distance of a route. When planning your visit, you can therefore distinguish between orienting yourself by a named hill and following a specific route.

Seasonal Activities at Tjustvallen

The activity you choose at Tjustvallen depends on the time of year. In winter, public skating is available on the artificially iced rink; in the summer months, tennis is played there. Tjustvallen also has an artificially iced bandy rink. If you are planning your visit around public skating, check the opening times in advance.

The timing of cultural events and seasonal activities differs when choosing your travel dates: a particular concert or dance evening depends on the event date, public skating on winter, and tennis on the summer months. If one of these activities is the main reason for your stay, check the relevant event date and, for skating, the opening times in advance.
