Accommodation in Edsbruk
Edsbruk brings together church and industrial history with trails by Lake Storsjön. For a destination that offers cultural connections and outdoor activity, the town has several distinct themes: Västra Eds Church, traces of Eds Bruk, and trails of varying lengths. If you’re looking for a hotel in Edsbruk, you can consider in advance whether historic buildings, a walk, or both will be the focus of your stay.
Church and Industrial History
Västra Eds Church stands by Lake Storsjön in Edsbruk and was inaugurated in 1863. The ruins of its medieval predecessor stand immediately beside the present-day church. The current church is designed in the Neo-Renaissance style and has a largely preserved interior. Its furnishings include a baptismal font made of Gotland limestone dating from 1240 and a 15th-century reliquary depicting Saint Catherine of Alexandria. Both were transferred from the old church.
The grave crosses at Västra Eds Church may also be linked to the town’s history: they are believed to have been made at Eds Bruk, possibly by Walloons who came to Ed in the 17th century. This cautious attribution is part of the town’s tradition; it should not be taken as confirmed authorship.
Another architectural feature is the bridge over the outlet of Lake Storsjön at Edsbruk. Its pointed stone arch blends with the surrounding industrial landscape. Church and industrial history thus meet in different structures, rather than at a single point of interest.
The Eds Bruk ironworks was founded in 1670. At Eds Bruk are the protected ruins of Gamlebruk: the remains of a blast furnace foundation and a forge. The old roasting house stands west of the mill. It bears the year 1839 and is well preserved. These buildings give concrete form to the industrial heritage; its history also extends into more recent production. Eds Bruk’s paper mill operated from 1889 to 1991. The H97 Uknadalen area of national cultural-historical interest includes Edsbruk’s industrial landscape, with remains of the older ironworks and the later pulp mill.
Trails and Route Options
Edsbruk-Xrundan is a circular route of about 3.4 kilometres, which runs clockwise. It starts at the information boards to the right of the grocery store. The route alternates between asphalt, gravel paths, grassy trails, and wooden bridges. At 6.5 kilometres, Kyrkvägen is the longer route, running between the village of Vråka and Edsbruk. It crosses Edsån, whose waters once powered the ironworks in Ed, and ends at the avenue leading to Edsbruk.
The stated distances help with comparison: Xrundan is the shorter loop, while Kyrkvägen is the longer route between two places. Xrundan also includes a variety of surfaces in its route description. If you prefer a circular route or a path between Vråka and Edsbruk, these are two concrete differences to consider when planning; the distances alone do not indicate walking times.
Edsbruk also offers a walking trail by Lake Storsjön and viewpoints. Outside Edsbruk, the Hex wind shelter was inaugurated on the slope leading down to Lake Storsjön. These features add other landscape landmarks to the trails in town, without treating the shorter loop and the longer Kyrkvägen as equivalent.
Seasonal Cultural Events
In summer, Konst & Fika presents art exhibitions in the old watermill. As the exhibitions are seasonal, check the dates for your travel period if you’re planning a visit. Groups can book knowledgeable guided tours along Kyrkvägen, with coffee breaks at Vråka or Helleberg. Depending on your interests, this lets you focus your stay more on art, local history, or a guided route.
