If you’re looking for a hotel in Näshult, it helps to consider the themes that shape the village: a remarkable wooden church, traces of earlier trade and mining, and places to enjoy nature and water. These highlights are quite distinct. The church combines a special architectural style with its setting by Lake Prästsjön and an old winged altar. Gamla Affär'n offers a glimpse into the history of a rural shop; Silverberget and Silvergruvan are associated with mining. Höghult, Serarpabadet and the fishing area at Lake Grytesjön each offer a different connection to the landscape and water. This gives you concrete places and themes to help you get your bearings in Näshult and find what suits your travel interests.

The Wooden Church by Lake Prästsjön

Näshults kyrka is a well-preserved and remarkable example of the wooden churches built in Småland during the 18th century. It is one of three surviving examples of this unusual type of wooden church in Småland. The church stands on a hill by Lake Prästsjön and houses a winged altar that is approximately 500 years old. Its age adds an older historical dimension alongside the 18th-century building. To reach the church, take Road 125 and then Kyrkvägen east; after the turnoff, it is 800 metres ahead on the left. The church’s architecture, lakeside setting and route there offer different aspects to consider when planning your trip.

Local History: From Shop to Mining

Gamla Affär'n was a rural shop in Näshult, operating from around 1910 until 2 December 1969. Its opening date is therefore approximate, while its closure is dated to a specific day. The old meat counter, cash register and scales have been preserved in Gamla Affär'n. These items offer concrete examples that bring the shop’s former operations to life.

Mining is also part of the village’s history. In 1544, King Gustav Vasa took an interest in the newly discovered deposits at Silverberget in Näshult. An investigation found that the silver deposit at Silvergruvan was very small. To find Silvergruvan, follow the signs from Road 125.

Bockahålet offers another, quite different connection to history: the cave lies in a rock crevice and was mentioned as early as the 17th century in an inventory of antiquities. Here, a distinctive rock formation is linked with an early historical reference.

Nature, Swimming and Fishing

The nearby Höghult Nature Reserve features old-growth forest, rock slabs and a body of water, giving the area a distinct wilderness character. There are no recreational facilities there. The terrain is hilly and dotted with numerous boulders. At Höghult, the natural surroundings themselves shape the visit.

Serarpabadet is a swimming area by Lake Serarpsjön in Näshult parish. Facilities at the swimming area may change, so check what is currently available before your visit. The Grytesjöns Fiskevårdsområde fishing area offers a different experience: it includes Lake Grytesjön and sections of the Gårdvedaån upstream and downstream of the lake. If you plan to fish, check the applicable rules and permits separately. The nature reserve, swimming area and fishing area therefore offer distinct ways to enjoy nature and water.
