Vetlanda Between Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Vetlanda
For your stay in Vetlanda, nature, outdoor activities and cultural history can each take center stage. If you’re looking for a hotel in Vetlanda, first consider which of these aspects of the area interests you most: the landscape along the Emån, routes with different themes, or museums and architectural history.
Nature, Birdlife and Trails
Illharjen is a densely vegetated delta on the Emån River. Around 60 different bird species nest there each year. This makes the natural area around Illharjen an ideal destination for anyone interested in landscapes and birdlife.
The Illharjenrundan is an easily accessible walking trail just over a kilometer from the center of Vetlanda. Along the way, it passes a Bronze Age burial ground, combining nature with an archaeological site. The Vetlandarundan offers a different perspective: this 27-kilometer hiking trail loops around the central town of Vetlanda. The Historical Walk, meanwhile, covers the town’s history from the medieval village community to the modern commercial town. These trails therefore focus on different things: distance, an archaeological site, or Vetlanda’s development.
The Planetrundan cycling and walking route runs from the Solen sculpture in central Vetlanda to the Östanå recreation area, where Neptunus is located. Veckans bana offers a seasonal highlight: during the summer months, new courses are available every week for anyone who wants to get outdoors in the forest and countryside. During the season, these courses are set up in various locations, including around the central town of Vetlanda.
Golf and Activities
Vetlanda Golfklubb has an 18-hole course in the natural surroundings of Småland, by the Emån and Lake Grumlan. There is also a 9-hole pay-and-play course, open to everyone, even without a golf proficiency certificate. The two options differ in size and access: one course has 18 holes, while the other has nine and can be played without a golf proficiency certificate.
Museums, Architecture and Local History
The Vetlanda Museum is housed in a courthouse dating from 1938. It has a creative workshop for all age groups. The museum’s subjects and collections include contemporary Swedish art, archival material, photographs and cultural history objects connected to Vetlanda. The Vetlanda School Museum offers a glimpse into school life in the past and displays objects, furniture and school materials from older schools in the surrounding area.
Anyone interested in architectural history can explore Vetlanda’s digital architecture walks, which cover architectural history and details typical of their period. The first focuses on the old Stationsgatan. The runestones offer another historical perspective: Vetlanda Church houses two examples made of diabase. The runestone in Apoteksparken was erected by Arinmund in memory of his father Hära and his brothers Torbjörn and Näve.
Njudungs Hembygdsmuseum in Forngården features well-preserved houses and an interesting collection of objects. Storstugan there is 250 years old. Uppståndelsekapellet, the chapel crematorium in Vetlanda, also has particular historical significance: it dates from 1935 and was the first crematorium built in Jönköping County.
