Tännäs: Mountain scenery, church and musk oxen
Accommodation in Tännäs
Tännäs combines lush forest scenery with impressive mountain landscapes and offers experiences year-round. The Tännån River winds through the village. There are several ways to plan your trip: explore the architectural history of Tännäs Church, take a guided tour at the Musk Ox Centre, enjoy cycling and walking routes, or go sport fishing. If you are looking for a hotel in Tännäs, these interests can be a practical starting point for deciding what you want from your stay.
The church and local history
Tännäs Church is located 648 metres above sea level and is one of Sweden’s highest-altitude churches. The present church was built between 1840 and 1855 and inaugurated on 10 October 1858. Its elevation, construction period and inauguration date give the church a specific historical context. If you are interested in church architecture or local history, a visit combines a precise elevation with a precisely dated history.
Tännäs Church is usually locked. To visit, you can contact the parish office and arrange an appointment; a church caretaker will open it if possible.
Guided tour at the Musk Ox Centre
The guided tour at the Musk Ox Centre starts in Tännäs; afterwards, you drive seven kilometres in your own car. The tour includes a 200-metre walk along a gravel path and a route past the observation tower. From there, you can see the area and the natural environment where the wild musk ox herd lives. The experience also includes a visit to the musk ox enclosure, followed by an exhibition where you can learn more and ask questions.
When preparing, be sure to distinguish between the two distances: seven kilometres are covered by car, while the 200-metre walk is on foot. This helps you understand which sections of the tour you will cover in your own car and which you will walk.
Cycling route, trail and rest stop
Tännäslänken is an easy, 39-kilometre cycling route, with Härjedalen Mountain Museum or Tännäskröket as the designated start and end point. Check the route status before setting off. Tännäsleden passes Klyfttjärnsstugan, which is a suitable place to stop for a coffee break. The two routes address different planning considerations: for Tännäslänken, the focus is on distance and difficulty, while Tännäsleden offers the option of a break at the hut.
Sport fishing and Härjebrygg
With a Fiskepasset fishing permit, you can fish in most designated sport fishing waters in the Funäs and Tännäs area, including waters allocated by the state. In the wider Funäsfjällen area, Tännäs-Funäsdalen FVO offers 70 designated sport fishing waters.
Tännäs is also home to the microbrewery Härjebrygg, which welcomes visitors. If you are planning a visit, check visiting options before you travel.
