Discover Halmstad
Accommodation in Halmstad
Halmstad can be explored through a wide range of interests: coastal scenery, city history, art and sports. If you are looking for a hotel in Halmstad, it helps to decide first what you would like to focus on during your stay. The examples below highlight specific routes and attractions to include in your plans—from a long coastal trail to museums and sports activities.
Coastal Trails and Scenery
Prins Bertils stig begins at Halmstad Castle and runs for 18 kilometres from central Halmstad to Tylösand and on to Möllegård. The coastal trail passes through Tylösand, where a four-kilometre sandy beach is framed by distinctive dunes. At Galgberget, there are walking trails of varying lengths and difficulty levels.
A walk along the Nissan River is another option in its own right: it is just over eight kilometres long. This means there are two stated route lengths to compare—just over eight kilometres along the Nissan and 18 kilometres on Prins Bertils stig—while the trails at Galgberget vary in length and difficulty. You can take these differences into account when planning your day without assuming that the Galgberget trails have a single set distance.
History and Museums
Construction of Halmstad Castle was initiated by King Christian IV of Denmark at the beginning of the 17th century. Norre Port is the only surviving city gate in Halmstad. The two sites offer different historical points of interest: the beginning of a castle project initiated by royalty and a surviving city gate.
The open-air museum HallandsgĂĄrden is located on Galgberget in central Halmstad. It includes historic buildings from all parts of Halland. This means the focus there is not just on individual buildings, but also on buildings originating from across the entire Halland region.
Halland Art Museum is located next to Norre Katts Park and by the Nissan River. It offers a wide-ranging exhibition programme and a variety of events. As programme details may change, it is a good idea to check the current events calendar before planning a specific visit.
Art in the City
Picasso’s 15-metre-high sculpture Head of a Woman stands in Picasso Park by the Nissan River. The foyer of Halmstad Theatre features a large mural to which all the artists of the Halmstad Group contributed. In addition, art has been created on walls in Halmstad every year since 2013, and guided art walks on various themes are held regularly. The examples differ in format: a named sculpture, a mural created collaboratively and walks with a thematic focus. If you are interested in an art walk, it is worth checking the available dates.
Sports and Activities
Halmstad Arena Baths has a 25-metre sports pool with eight lanes. There is also a leisure pool with water slides, water channels and whirlpool areas, as well as diving facilities from a one-metre springboard and a three-metre platform. The different water facilities are clearly distinct: swimming lanes, a leisure pool and diving facilities.
There are public skating sessions at Halmstad Arena, when all skaters can use the practice rink. Check the current times in advance if you are planning to go skating. Halmstad Arena Skate Park offers 2,000 square metres of concrete space for street and bowl skating.
Simstadion Brottet has heated outdoor pools and a water slide. Live concerts featuring well-known Swedish and international artists are held there every summer. The name Brottet recalls the stone quarrying that once took place at this site. Halmstad Sports Museum, meanwhile, displays sports equipment and trophies from sports clubs.
At Halmstad Wakepark, you can try wakeboarding. Experienced staff offer tips and instructions to both beginners and experienced wakeboarders; the necessary equipment can be rented on site. Support and equipment rental are therefore specific aspects to consider when planning this activity.
