Steninge offers a variety of themes for a trip: coastal landscapes, hilly woodland, swimming and crab fishing, as well as architectural and industrial history. The different highlights range from rocky islets to historic industries.

Coastal Landscapes and Nature

Fågelholmarna consists of rocky islets about a hundred metres off the beach in the northern part of Steningekusten. In the “Steninge naturreservat, Hulabäck” nature reserve, deciduous trees form a mixed forest in hilly terrain. At least part of the area is considered to be an older sand dune overgrown with forest. This offers a variety of natural features to explore: rocky coastal islets and hilly mixed woodland with at least part of the area thought to have originated as dunes.

In the wider surrounding area, you can travel along a gravel path in the northern part of the Steningekusten nature reserve using a wheelchair or pushchair. Local conditions may change, so check them before visiting.

Swimming and Crab Fishing

You can swim at a sandy beach at Steninge havsbad. You can catch small crabs from the pier as far as Stora Skär. This gives you a choice of two different coastal activities: swimming at the beach or fishing for crabs from the pier to Stora Skär. Swimming conditions may vary by season, and conditions for crab fishing may also change. Check conditions in advance if you are planning to take part in either activity.

Stone Quarrying and Glassworks

Towards the end of the 19th century, the area around Steninge was shaped by stone quarrying. Vein gneiss quarried in the Steninge area was transported away and used as paving stones. The material’s journey to its use is therefore also part of the area’s history, alongside the quarrying itself. During the same period as the stone quarrying, a glassworks operated between the sand dunes and Steninge’s coastal road. It adds a second industry from the same era to the history of stone quarrying.

The Architectural History of Steninge Church

Steninge Church takes us further back in history. It was probably built during the 13th century. The original church had no tower; until 1679, a freestanding wooden bell tower stood east of the church. A bell tower of this kind is structurally separate from the church building—and this arrangement characterised the church at the time. A major renovation in 1932 gave Steninge Church its present appearance. The estimated construction date and the renovation thus mark different stages in the building’s history. The church, probably built in the 13th century, predates the stone quarrying of the late 19th century by several centuries.

If you are looking for a hotel in Steninge, you can use these themes to plan your trip: coastal activities, nature, or local history.
