Norrala brings together themes related to cultural history and nature. Points of interest include Norrala kyrka and Staffans stupa, the Norrala rune stone, a speech at Kungsgården, the Norrala hembygdsdräkt and the Norralaån. The themes range from church history and a specific event to a newly assembled traditional costume and a river’s ecological function.

The Church and Staffans stupa

Norrala kyrka is the oldest church in the Norrala-Trönö parish. Staffans stupa stands in the church cemetery; Staffan, the apostle of Hälsingland, is buried there. The church and cemetery thus connect two aspects: the church’s place within its parish and Staffan’s burial at the site of the stupa. For travellers interested in the religious history of the area, the connection lies in this relationship between the parish, the cemetery and Staffan.

Rune stone of red sandstone

Another cultural point of interest is the Norrala rune stone. It is made of red sandstone and bears a Christian cross. The material and motif offer two different points of entry: the red sandstone describes the material, while the cross is a Christian symbol. If you are interested in archaeological evidence, the stone thus combines a specific detail about its material with a religious motif.

Historical Remembrance

At Kungsgården in 1521, Gustav Vasa delivered a passionate speech to the farmers of Hälsingland. He asked them for help against the Danes. The audience and purpose are therefore also part of this historical episode, alongside the year: the focus is on the farmers of Hälsingland and a specific request for support.

The Vasamonumentet was erected in 1773. A cultural walk in Norrala passes by the monument. Check the exact route locally if you are planning the walk. The years 1521 and 1773 refer to different things: 1521 is associated with the speech at Kungsgården, and 1773 with the erection of the monument.

The Norrala Hembygdsdräkt

The Norrala hembygdsdräkt is a newly designed bygdedräkt, or local traditional costume. It is based on older garments preserved from Norrala. A men’s costume was assembled around 1974, and two women’s costumes around 1932 and 1988. The term “newly designed” distinguishes the costume from a single, unchanged old outfit: older garments provide the basis for later assemblies. The years show a gradual development, with two different dates for the women’s costumes and another for the men’s costume.

The Norralaån and its ecological significance

The Norralaån adds a nature-related perspective to the cultural history themes. Despite having been straightened, it is of great importance as a spawning ground for fish migrating from the sea. A spawning ground is a body of water where fish spawn; the term therefore describes one of the river’s functions. The straightening and ecological significance concern different characteristics: one describes the river’s course, the other its role for migratory fish.
