Borriol combines a river valley between the coastal plain and the inland region with mountainous terrain and a rich, layered heritage. For travelers looking for a hotel in Borriol, archaeological traces, architectural history and routes through the landscape offer practical starting points for planning a trip. Highlights range from the remains of a historic quarter to churches and museum exhibits, as well as a circular walking route and traditional structures in the mountains.

River valley and mountainous landscape

The Borriol Valley follows the course of the Borriol River and connects the coastal plain with the inland region. The municipality’s terrain is predominantly mountainous; areas suitable for farming and livestock raising are mainly located in the river valley. This brings different landscapes together: the valley, with its agricultural use, and the mountain areas, where numerous dry-stone structures can be found. This relationship between the landscape and human activity is also reflected in the town’s historical heritage.

Archaeological traces and architectural history

La Moreria was the quarter where Borriol’s Moriscos lived until their expulsion in 1609. Excavations have uncovered paved streets and simple multi-storey houses. Other finds include an irrigation channel, cisterns, a cement kiln and an underground grain store. Together, these architectural remains offer insights into the quarter’s housing, water use and food storage.

The Church of Sant Bartomeu also reveals several historical building phases: it was built in the 16th century on the site of an earlier structure dating from the 13th century. The ceiling of the presbytery features Baroque paintings from the late 17th century depicting episodes from the saint’s life. The Ermita de Sant Vicent Ferrer is a 17th-century building. It stands at the place where the Valencian saint preached in the 15th century; from there, there are panoramic views of the town center, the Castillo and La Moreria.

Museum and traditional crafts

The Museu d’Història de Borriol (MUHBO) is housed in the Casa de la Vila, a neoclassical building dating from the late 18th century. A Gothic pointed arch from the 15th-century Casa del Consejo is preserved there. The Roman hall contains the Mil·liari de Borriol, a stone milestone with an inscription. The second floor displays ethnological objects related to Borriol’s traditional stonecutting craft.

The craft connects the museum’s themes with the structures in the landscape. The mountain areas contain numerous dry-stone structures, including terraces, stone huts, shelters, cisterns and lime or cement kilns. The dry-stone building tradition is part of Borriol’s culture, history and landscape, and is still passed down from generation to generation. The historic irrigation heritage also includes channels, basins and other structures for using water around the Borriol River.

Circular route and practical information

The Ruta de la Joquera is a circular route with numerous cultural and natural points of interest along the way. Signs provide the scientific names of plants and animals, and translations into English and French are also available. If you plan to take this route, check the trail conditions and signage before setting off, as both can change. A cycling route in Borriol has no particularly steep inclines, making it suitable for families and children too.

A path leads from the town to the Castillo de Borriol. The visible remains of the castle are of Arab origin; trail conditions may vary. A public bus service operated by Autos Mediterráneo connects the municipality with Castelló. Bus stops are located along Avenida de Zaragoza. Check the latest timetable before traveling so your plans match the service available.
