Sot De Ferrer between the Palancia Valley and cultural heritage
Accommodation in Sot De Ferrer
Sot De Ferrer lies between the Sierra de Espadán to the north and the first foothills of the Sierra Calderona to the south. The RĂo Palancia valley crosses the municipal area and wraps around the town center from the northwest to the east. When planning a stay, you can therefore consider local history, archaeological traces, and trails as different points of interest.
Landscape and nature
The Cueva de la Moneda serves as a stopover for a migratory bat species. Inside, a descending gallery leads to a narrow rock fissure about 20 meters long. The river and valley are also important for orientation within the municipal area: the RĂo Palancia runs through Sot De Ferrer, while the valley wraps around the town center from the northwest to the east.
Buildings and history
The Palacio del Señor stands in the Plaza de la Iglesia and is designated a Bien de Interés Cultural. Its distinctive pointed-arch architecture dates from the late 13th century; Gothic details were added in the 14th and 15th centuries. These layers from different periods make the palace an important stop for anyone interested in the town’s architectural history.
The Iglesia Parroquial de la Inmaculada ConcepciĂłn was completed in the 18th century in the Neoclassical style. It houses a painting of the Immaculate Conception attributed to Vicente Masip or Juan de Juanes. Both names remain possible attributions. The Ermita de San Antonio is another historic landmark: it has been documented since the late 17th century. Construction of the Calvario on Monte de San Antonio began in 1801. Together, the ermita and Calvario make an excursion destination with expansive views.
Rochinas and traces of everyday life
At the Yacimiento de Rochinas, the structural outlines are well preserved despite the site’s ruined state. The complex comprises 17 rooms connected by a central corridor and measures 35 by 19 meters. A settlement on Monte de Rochinas lies in a bend of the RĂo Palancia. Its layout, the preserved structures, and its riverside location offer different points of reference for exploring local history.
The public washhouses also tell the story of everyday tasks. The Lavadero de la Rocha de la Escuela is beside the Acequia Mayor; its roof has been restored. The last washhouse in the village is below the Lavadero de la Luz. Sick people washed there to help prevent epidemics and infections among the population. The two sites represent different washing places and should not be confused.
Trails and excursion destinations
The SL-CV 186 runs parallel to the RĂo Palancia to the Iberian settlement site of La Rochina. Along the way, the route offers views of the Sierra Calderona and the Sierra de Espadán. It therefore links a specific destination with views of both mountain ranges. The Ermita de San Antonio and the Calvario are another named excursion destination; their expansive views are among the expressly noted features of this complex.
The VĂa Verde de Ojos Negros can be used on foot, by bicycle, or in a wheelchair. Some ramps outside the original route are exceptions. This limitation is part of the description of accessibility and is relevant when planning. The VĂa Verde and the SL-CV 186 therefore offer different kinds of routes: one focuses on access on foot, by bicycle, or in a wheelchair, while the other runs parallel to the river and leads to La Rochina.
