Argelita: Hiking, Water and Culture
Accommodation in Argelita
Argelita is located inland in the Alto Mijares comarca in CastellĂłn. The destination focuses on rural and nature tourism, as well as trails and routes. When planning, it is worth noting the differences: the hiking trails range from a route with a stated walking time to a technically challenging trail-running route. There are also swimming areas and historic sites. You can plan your days around whether hiking, water or culture should take priority.
Hiking trails with different profiles
The SL-CV91 “Climb to La Muela” is 3,668 metres long and takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes. The trail connects Argelita with Buey Negro Castle. The stated time is an approximate planning guide. Trail conditions and signage may change, so check both before setting out on a specific hike.
The Canaleta Trail is a 17-kilometre trail-running route with 1,028 metres of elevation gain, running mostly along technically challenging trails in Alto Mijares. Compared with the SL-CV91, it differs both in its considerably greater length and in its designated trail-running profile. Route conditions may also change; take this into account when planning.
The GR-333 long-distance trail of the Mancomunidad Espadán-Mijares passes through Argelita. Stage 11 runs from Toga to Argelita, and Stage 12 from Argelita to Vallat. This makes the town the destination of the eleventh stage and the starting point of the twelfth. These two sections give the long-distance trail a specific connection to Argelita; stage routes and trail conditions may change and should be checked before a hike.
Water and nature around Argelita
Along the stretch of the Villahermosa that runs through Argelita, there is a 450-metre swimming area divided into three sections. There is also a natural-water swimming pool next to Argelita’s sports grounds. Seasonal access and conditions may vary for both swimming options. Check the current situation before your visit.
Fuente de Sabinar is a natural spring; its flow may vary depending on the season. Fuente de la Santa Cruz (1930) is about a 30-minute walk from the village. Trail conditions may also change here. The different details help with orientation: Fuente de Sabinar is notable for its natural spring, while Fuente de la Santa Cruz is distinguished by its walking time from the village.
Church, towers and history
The Iglesia Parroquial de Santa Ana has two historical connections: it dates from the 17th century and is in the Churrigueresque Baroque style. The church also still houses a relic of the Holy Cross, brought from Rome in 1657. The building’s history and the relic refer to different points in time.
The Torre de Zei-Abu-Zeit has been restored and bears an Arabic inscription dating from 1252. At the Castillo Palacio de Ceyt Abu Ceyt, the two towers were restored in 1986 and remain in good condition today. The dates refer to different historical details: 1252 dates the inscription, while 1986 marks the restoration of the two towers.
A reservation with the tourist information office is required to visit the museum in the Torre Redonda. As this requirement may change, check the reservation arrangements before your visit.
Fiestas de la Santa Cruz
The Fiestas de la Santa Cruz in Argelita take place every year on 3 May. The celebration includes a Misa baturra with musical accompaniment, followed by the distribution of a special bread. If you would like to plan your trip around the festivities, check the programme for the relevant year. The fixed annual date and the traditions mentioned provide a specific point of reference in the cultural calendar.
