Montán combines hiking trails with cultural history and a natural landscape shaped by springs and ravines. When planning your trip, you can choose from a range of routes: two long-distance trails, a circular walk of almost two kilometres and the Ruta del Agua, which starts on Avenida de la Tejería. Architecture, archaeological finds and wine traditions also give your stay its own distinct highlights.

Hiking on long-distance trails and circular routes

The GR 7 crosses the municipality of Montán from north to south. The GR 36 enters the municipality from the northeast and then leaves it on its way to its final destination. Both are long-distance trails, and the main difference between their routes through Montán is the direction indicated.

The Ruta Monte Calvario is a circular walk of almost two kilometres, with a moderate difficulty level and an elevation gain of 102 metres. The Ruta del Agua starts on Avenida de la Tejería. Along it is a cave more than one kilometre long, with three galleries. In summer, you can also swim in natural pools on the Ruta del Agua.

Springs, ravines and water engineering

There are more than thirty fountains in the town of Montán and its surroundings. The natural landscape also includes numerous springs and fountains, as well as densely vegetated ravines with waterfalls and swimming pools. A viewpoint offers views of the Peñagolosa massif, which rises to 1,813 metres.

About 600 metres from Montán is the Fuente de la Tejería. It has a recreation area with stone tables and benches, a barbecue area and a shelter. Inside the shelter is a stone table.

The Acueducto de la Teja is a dry-stone structure with three arches. It carried water across the ravine to irrigate the fields there. The structure illustrates both the construction technique and its role in irrigation.

Architecture and history

The Iglesia Parroquial San Bernardo Abad was completed in 1735. Its single-nave interior features elaborate acanthus decoration, associated with the Churrigueresque style or late Baroque. The Convento de los Padres Servitas de San Miguel y Santa Ana is an example of post-Baroque and pre-academic architecture. The church and convent thus offer different architectural points of interest: the church stands out for its spatial design and decoration, while the convent is notable for its architectural classification.

Ceramics dating from the 7th to the 6th century BC have been recovered at the Monte Calvario archaeological site. These finds offer a different perspective on Montán's past from the completion dates and architectural features of its religious buildings.

Wine and local produce

The Museo Enológico introduces visitors to the art of grape harvesting and winemaking. The Sacacubos celebration takes place in October and includes a wine tasting. Oil produced in Montán was classified as “extra virgin” in analyses. Taken together, the museum, celebration and local product offer insights into different aspects of regional wine and food culture.

The seasons bring different highlights: Sacacubos takes place in October, while swimming in the natural pools along the Ruta del Agua is a summer option.
