La Pobla de Benifassà: Nature, Art and History
Accommodation in La Pobla De Benifassà
When looking for a hotel in La Pobla de Benifassà, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip. The GR 7 E24 route, art in the town centre and the Tinença de Benifassà Nature Park appeal to different interests. The distances to Font Lluny and the Monasterio de Santa María also provide a practical geographical reference for planning.
Route, Nature and Relaxation
The GR 7 E24 route leads towards Fredes; Fredes is part of La Pobla de Benifassà. If you are planning your trip around a particular hiking destination, you can use this direction as a reference when choosing where to stay. The route name and the location are both relevant: the route leads to Fredes, and Fredes is part of the municipality.
The Font Lluny recreation area is about 500 metres from the town centre and has a natural spring, tables and barbecue facilities. The approximate distance provides a geographical reference, while the facilities make Font Lluny a distinct destination for spending time outdoors. The area thus complements the town centre and cultural attractions with a specifically named place to relax.
The Tinença de Benifassà Nature Park is home to, among other species, Iberian ibex, roe deer, wild boar, vultures, Bonelli’s eagles and booted eagles. The list includes mammals and birds of prey, giving an impression of the variety of wildlife in the nature park. This focus on nature complements the individual named destinations by drawing attention to the protected area as a landscape.
Art and History
The Casa-museo de Renate Steen is located in the centre of La Pobla de Benifassà. The artist exhibits her paintings and sculptures there. Just before La Pobla is the open-air museum Jardí de Peter, where imaginary sculptures by the artist Peter Buch can be seen. The two art venues differ both in location and in the types of works on display: a house museum in the town centre and an open-air museum with imaginary sculptures just outside town.
The municipal visitor guide, revised in September 2021, also lists the Edicions H. Jenninger – Galeria d’art art gallery in La Pobla de Benifassà. The same visitor guide mentions a rental service for pedal scooters and canoes at the reservoir through Moli l’Abad. If you plan to use this service, check before travelling whether it is currently available.
The Monasterio de Santa María, also known as the Cartuja de Santa María, is about seven kilometres from La Pobla de Benifassà. Jaime I founded it in the 13th century, and it was built in the Gothic-Cistercian style. This gives you the monastery’s approximate distance from town, its founding history and its architecture as points of reference. Anyone interested in architectural history will find a distinct theme here alongside the art attractions in and just outside La Pobla.
The Cova dels Rossegadors, also known as Cueva del Polvorín, is on the Ulldecona reservoir in the heart of Tinença de Benifassà Nature Park. Advance reservations are required to see the rock paintings. Include the reservation in your travel plans and check this requirement again before you arrive.
The Festa de Sant Antoni includes the slaughter of a pig, the building of the Barraca, a communal dinner and dancing. Individual activities may vary. The events listed give an insight into the components of the festival without assuming a specific date or current programme.
