Explore Rois through its hiking trails, river landscapes and historic sites. Two circular routes differ considerably in length, and several Camino de Santiago routes add their own local connections. If you are looking for a destination for hiking, cultural heritage or nature by the water, these specific themes can help guide your choice.

Circular trails through woodland and to Castro Lupario

The Ruta das Penicias is an 8.5-kilometre circular trail of low difficulty. It starts and ends at the Church of San Mamede de Rois; a shorter half-route is also possible. Along the way, it passes through shaded sections beside the river and through woodlands with native trees. Its length, circular layout and shorter option give you concrete points to consider when planning your hike. Rois’s hiking trails have been prepared and signposted. As route infrastructure can change, check the current conditions before setting out.

A shorter route option is the Ruta do Castro Lupario: the circular trail has a main route and three variants, ranging from 3.8 to 4.5 kilometres; it is also of low difficulty. By comparison, the Ruta das Penicias is longer at 8.5 kilometres. On the Ruta do Castro Lupario, you can explore the entire site of Castro Lupario. Its northern and southern walls are visible and well preserved. This route therefore combines a choice of distance with a close-up view of the site.

Camino de Santiago routes and their local connections

The Camino Portugués passes through Rois. Its Rois variant runs through a pine forest between O Sisto and the hamlet of Angueira de Castro. The Camino de Santiago por la Ría de Muros-Noia is a separate route that connects the places of Martelo, Codeso, Agrafoxo and Urdilde in the Rois area. It was officially recognized in December 2020. Those who choose this route to the tomb of the Apostle can obtain the Compostela; check the current requirements in advance.

Cultural heritage sites are also connected to various routes. The Igrexa Parroquial de San Mamede de Rois is a religious heritage church located on the Camino Portugués, the Camino Portugués da Costa and the Ruta do Mar de Arousa e Ulla. The Cruceiro de Cornes is an ethnographic stone cross dating from 1765, located in Cornes, Rois, on the Camino de Santiago. The Viacrucis de Sorribas is in Sorribas, Rois, and on the Camino Portugués.

River landscapes, relaxation and nature

The Playa Fluvial de Seira is located on the RĂo Rois. It has green spaces, as well as areas for swimming and fishing. The picnic area was renovated in 2017 and is equipped with tables and benches; the Playa Fluvial also has a car park. Seasonal conditions may change. If you plan to use the swimming or fishing areas, check the latest information before your visit.

Rois’s natural landscape can also be seen along its rivers and streams, where well-preserved riverside woodlands grow, with alders, willows and other species typical of the Atlantic forest. The river landscape is therefore not only a feature of individual trails, but also of the region’s vegetation. Hikers who pay attention to plants and woodland types will find specific features here that differ from the built heritage sites along the routes.

Cultural heritage and visits

The Pazo do Faramello originated as the Real Fábrica de Papel del Faramello, founded in 1710. The old mills and their associated equipment can still be visited. You can book a guided tour, with three time slots available. Times and availability may change. Check both when planning your visit.

The various sites give Rois more than one focus: alongside circular trails and river areas, there is religious cultural heritage, a historic stone cross and the history of papermaking. You can explore these themes individually or take their route connections into account when planning, without treating the different routes as though they were the same.

Cycling and getting here

The municipality offers cycling on quiet, flat roads, over small passes and steep climbs, as well as on mountain bike trails along the rivers. These options therefore differ both in terrain and in the type of route. As route conditions and availability can change, check the information when planning a specific ride.

Rois is close to the AP-9 and the AutovĂa del Barbanza. The expressway between Santiago de Compostela and the RĂa de Muros-Noia passes through Urdilde in the northern part of the municipality. For your journey, check the current route and road conditions.
