Betanzos – Old Town, Culture and Trails along the Mandeo
Accommodation in Betanzos
Betanzos combines a richly layered historic centre with cultural sites and trails along the Mandeo. When planning your stay, you can choose from a range of options, including medieval and modern architecture, museums, pilgrimage traditions and natural areas. This makes it easy to explore the city as a destination for a trip to Galicia, according to your own interests.
Old Town and Architectural History
The historic old town of Betanzos offers seven centuries of local history, architecture and tradition. Among its notable religious buildings is the Igrexa de Santa MarĂa do Azogue: the Gothic church was built between the second half of the 14th century and the first half of the 15th century and is classified as an Asset of Cultural Interest (B.I.C.). The Iglesia y Convento de San Francisco is also Gothic, dates from the second half of the 14th century and has B.I.C. status. Sarcophagi belonging to several members of the Andrade family preserve another aspect of the city’s history within the church.
The Iglesia de Santiago was built in the 15th century by Fernán Pérez de Andrade “O Mozo” on the site of an older Romanesque church. Its southern Santa Gate was historically used by pilgrims travelling to Santiago who visited the sanctuary of Remedios. The Santuario de Nuestra Señora de la Quinta Angustia offers a different perspective on religious architecture: the 18th-century church has a Latin-cross plan and is considered an example of Galician Baroque. The Capela da Madalena, from the same century, is associated with a former hospital for people with leprosy, dedicated to Saint Lazarus.
City gates and other historic sites add to the walking route. The Porta da Vila, also known as the Puerta Real, is a medieval gate bearing the coats of arms of Galicia, Castile and LeĂłn, as well as the city’s coat of arms. The coat of arms of Galicia is considered the oldest surviving depiction of this emblem in the region. At the Romanesque Iglesia Parroquial de San MartĂn de Tiobre, the rectangular plan, single-nave interior, rectangular apse and pointed triumphal arch are all part of the architecture. Sculpted capitals in the Santiago style add a distinctive touch.
Parks, Museums and Cultural Routes
Parque del Pasatiempo is an extraordinary encyclopaedic park from the late 19th century and one of Galicia’s unique cultural creations. A walk takes you across different levels, through grottoes and passages, and around a symbolic visual landscape. If you plan to visit the park, check access arrangements in advance.
The Museo das Mariñas is housed in the former Santo Domingo monastery, dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. Its collection comprises more than 5,000 objects. The CIEC (Centro Internacional de la Estampa Contemporánea) offers a different perspective on art: it is a printmaking workshop and museum in a modernist building created by Rafael González Villar for the Núñez family. Its collection includes more than 3,000 works by established and emerging printmakers. The Fundación CIEC also gives visitors the opportunity to watch and learn about the creation of graphic works, try the techniques themselves and make prints. Find out about visitor arrangements in advance.
Several cultural routes explore different aspects of the city. The Ruta del Modernismo is a walking route featuring important examples of modernist and eclectic architecture. The Ruta de los Oficios leads to traditional trades and former craft and commercial sites. The Rutas de los hermanos GarcĂa Naveira explore the social, educational and architectural legacy of Juan and JesĂşs GarcĂa Naveira. Each route focuses on a different theme: architectural styles, historic work or the contributions of the two brothers.
The Mandeo, Protected Areas and Pilgrimage Routes
Betanzos is part of the Mariñas Coruñesas e Terras do Mandeo Biosphere Reserve. Parts of the municipality are also included in the Natura 2000 network as bird protection areas and Sites of Community Importance. At the confluence of the Mendo and Mandeo, the RĂa de Betanzos has extensive coastal marshes alongside the urban area, as well as a small port and boats. The river landscape and designated protected areas give the surroundings a character quite different from the narrow historic streets.
The Ruta Os Caneiros follows the Mandeo to Campo dos Caneiros and passes through wooded, natural areas. The Ruta Os MuĂños de Pelamios runs through the former Batán de Pelamios and past the remains of old mills, channels and waterways. If you choose one of these routes, check local trail conditions before setting out.
The Camino Inglés is also an important part of Betanzos’ pilgrimage history. The historic route runs from Ferrol to Betanzos, linking the coast and inland areas, natural landscapes and medieval towns. On the Pontedeume–Betanzos stage, pilgrims enter the town after crossing the Mandeo over A Ponte Vella. The Oficina de Turismo de Betanzos provides information and personal guidance on the Camino route, cultural heritage, available services and the next stages; pilgrims can also have their credentials stamped there. Check the tourist information office’s opening hours in advance.
Traditions and Local Cuisine
The cultural calendar includes the Globo de San Roque: this handmade paper structure rises each year as the highlight of the San Roque celebrations and is a defining tradition in Betanzos. The Jira dos Caneiros is a popular, community-centred pilgrimage tradition associated with the Mandeo. During the Feria Franca Medieval, the old town recreates the crafts, markets and atmosphere of medieval times. Event dates vary from year to year.
Cuisine also contributes to the area’s local character. Tortilla de Betanzos is a gastronomic symbol of the city and part of its culinary heritage. Another local speciality is a light, fruity wine traditionally sampled in establishments with a laurel branch hanging by the door. Individual establishments may change; if you are planning a tasting, ask locally about available options.
