Castellar De Santiago brings together distinctive architectural and cultural landmarks with routes and natural areas across the municipality. This gives you two different themes to focus on when planning your trip: the town’s history and activities in the surrounding landscape. The places and conditions described here can help you get a sense of your destination before choosing a hotel for your stay.

Cultural Heritage and Local Traditions

The square bullring in Castellar De Santiago was built in 1645 and is one of the oldest bullrings in Spain. Together, the bullring and the Centro de Interpretación Pablo de Olavide form a unique cultural heritage complex in the comarca. The parish church of Santa Ana was built in the mid-16th century on uneven ground. An artificial stone embankment was created to level the building’s structure. The town’s historic architectural landmarks also include three houses bearing coats of arms: they display the same heraldic motifs and may have belonged to the last hidalgo families of Castellar De Santiago.

A fixture on the annual calendar is the Fiestas del Cristo de la Misericordia. Every year on September 13 at 9 p.m., bonfires are lit in the town’s streets to mark the beginning of the festivities. The program details may vary. Parque Francisco Castilla features sculptures inspired by the local flora and fauna.

Routes and Natural Areas

The rural paths of Castellar De Santiago connect the town with the Valle de Alcudia y Sierra Madrona Natural Park. The park is known for its biodiversity and Mediterranean landscapes. An extensive network of livestock trails can be used for hiking and cycling. Distinct from these is the GR 164, also known as the Cañada Real Conquense or Cañada de los Serranos, which passes through Castellar De Santiago. Visitors can also take horse-riding routes; astrotourism is another possible activity. If you plan to use the trails, take local trail conditions into account.

La Herrumbrosa, also called Rumbrosa, lies in the south of the municipal area, at the foot of the Sierra Morena. During the pilgrimage to San Marcos, this natural area serves as a local recreation spot. It can be visited free of charge and has no set opening hours; check access conditions before you travel. Cueva del Moreno lies within the municipal area in a transitional landscape between Campo de Montiel and the foothills of the Sierra Morena. It forms part of a cultural landscape where traces of the area’s earliest settlement have been preserved.

Visiting Conditions at the Iron Mine

The iron mine on the slopes of Cerro el CastellĂłn has Celtiberian origins. Visitors can go a few meters into the mine. In summer, when conditions are dry, a further section can be accessed; in winter, access is severely restricted because of possible flooding. Check local conditions before visiting, as this seasonal difference is essential when planning a trip to this destination.
