Discover Malagón: Teresian heritage and hiking trails
Accommodation in Malagón
Malagón brings together Teresian history, historic buildings, cultural events and hiking trails in the Sierra de Malagón. These different reasons for visiting can help guide your choice of hotel: first decide whether you mainly want to plan a town walk, a guided tour, cultural events or hikes.
Teresian sites and history
The “Caminando con Teresa” route is a Teresian walking tour of significant places in Malagón associated with Saint Teresa of Jesus. It is freely accessible throughout the day. As access conditions may change, check them locally before your visit.
On 11 April 1568, Saint Teresa of Jesus founded her third convent in Malagón, the Monasterio de San José. Construction began in 1576 according to her instructions. The two dates mark different stages: the convent's foundation and its later construction according to her instructions. The Museo Teresiano can be visited together with the church of the Monasterio de San José on a guided tour about the history and legacy of Saint Teresa. Check the tour arrangements in advance.
Churches, mills and art
The Parroquia de Santa María Magdalena was built in the 15th and 16th centuries beside the Camino Real de la Plata. The Molino Carrillo dates back to the 18th century. Its architectural features include sturdy stone walls, wooden roofs and a hydraulic mill wheel.
After opening, the Museo Gloria Merino was housed in the Centro Cultural Santa Teresa. The museum's works included pieces donated to the municipality of Malagón by Gloria Merino. The opening exhibition featured representative works from different periods of the artist's career, supplemented by sketches, illustrations, studies, photographs, awards and press articles. The Centro Cultural Santa Teresa is housed in a distinguished 19th-century mansion and hosts cultural activities, exhibitions and municipal events. The specific programme may vary.
Festivals throughout the year
Malagón's Carnival celebrations are recognised as Fiestas de Interés Turístico Regional (Regional Tourist Interest Festivals). The Carnival programme includes a regional Migas competition, with a tasting of the traditional dish accompanied by sweets and rosquillas. Dates and arrangements may vary from one edition to the next. The Romerías de las Aldeas take place every Sunday in May; their specific programme may also vary.
Hiking and nature
The Sierra de Malagón has hiking trails. Both distance and route type are useful when choosing a trail: the PR-CR 23 is 13.5 kilometres long and is a one-way route. The Sierra de Malagón–Molino Carrillo route is 9.5 kilometres there and back and is of moderate difficulty. Valdehierro–Peña Negra is an 18-kilometre loop, while Las Navas de Malagón is 16.4 kilometres there and back. This lets you distinguish between a one-way route, two out-and-back routes and a loop. Route details may be updated; check local trail information before setting out.
General access to the Reserva Natural Navas de Malagón is free. As a protected area, it requires visitors to be considerate: stay on the trails and paths and do not enter sensitive areas. As access conditions may change, check them locally.
