Llanos del Caudillo is one of nine colonization villages founded by the Instituto Nacional de ColonizaciĂłn (INC) in the province of Ciudad Real. The village combines a landscaped park with a landscape shaped by irrigation and distinctive evidence of its local history. If you are planning a stay, you can focus on walking areas, paths beside the water, architectural history or local festivities, depending on your interests.

Park and paths beside the irrigation canals

Parque el Lago features an artificial lake, walking areas and picnic spots. The Paseo de las Acequias offers a different landscape: this nature trail runs alongside the irrigation canals of Llanos del Caudillo. Poplars and other trees line the canals, while water basins and lush vegetation shape the route. Mulberry trees and other trees create a green microclimate that provides a refuge for various animals.

The Paseo connects the village centre to the cultivated fields via a network of paths. Features along the canals include fountains, water basins and distribution structures. As you walk, you can also see traditional structures associated with the use of groundwater. The Paseo was created in the 1950s during the colonization of the irrigated area of La Mancha. The route therefore brings together today’s landscape and the history of how it came to be.

The agricultural tracks around Llanos del Caudillo are also suitable for walking and cycling. They offer views across fields of grain and Piel de Sapo melons. The Paseo de las Acequias can be reached via the A-4 at kilometre 160 or via the CR-P-1513 road. Check local road information before setting out.

Church and the history of the QuinterĂa caves

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Llanos is the most representative building in the village centre and is open in the mornings. As opening hours may change, check them before visiting. The church’s architecture is simple and functional—a style characteristic of the colonization villages. Inside are an altarpiece with Marian images by Suárez and stained-glass windows by Valdivieso depicting the Ave Maria in Latin.

Another testament to rural history is the underground Quintería caves of the “bajo rasante” type. They are in the municipality, by the forest nursery site north of the village, and are classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural. Two caves have been preserved there, recreating traditional agricultural huts below ground. Their traditional layout includes an entrance via a Cañada, a kitchen at the back with a smoke vent, a stable on one side and, in some cases, small adjoining rooms. Agricultural labourers and small landowners traditionally dug such caves on public holidays or during periods of bad weather. Check current access arrangements before visiting.

Patron saint festivities and San Isidro

The patron saint festivities in honour of Our Lady of Los Llanos take place from 7 to 11 September; the feast day is 8 September. The programme includes religious and cultural events as well as music. Vaquillas also take place in the Auditorio de usos mĂşltiples during the festivities. The programme may vary from year to year.

The patron saint festivities also include the Comida Popular: residents prepare a communal meal that visitors can also attend. The menu features pork with tomatoes and a veal stew. Another event with agricultural ties is San Isidro Labrador on 15 May. It is celebrated with traditional activities and a festive atmosphere; the programme may also vary from year to year.
