Porzuna combines a volcanic site with archaeological collections, architectural history and regional traditions. This brings together a range of interests for travellers who want to include nature and culture in their stay. If you are looking for a hotel in Porzuna, you can plan your trip around your interests: Cerro de los Santos, museums and historical traces, or the landscape of the Río Bullaque.

Volcanic Landscapes by the Town Centre

The Monumento Natural Volcán del Cerro de los Santos is located next to the town centre of Porzuna. It is a monogenetic volcano, meaning it was formed by a single eruption. Its cone consists of black volcanic scoria, some of which is reddish in colour. The natural monument is free to visit and open year-round.

The most direct ascent to Cerro follows the path to the Ermita de San Isidro. It climbs from the road between Porzuna and the district of Las Casas del Río to the summit. This provides a specific route for exploring the volcano, distinct from the longer PR-CR11 trail.

River and Nature in the Municipality

The Río Bullaque flows through the municipality of Porzuna and shapes landscapes with diverse flora and fauna. Part of the area lies within the LIC and ZEPA protected area “Ríos de la Cuenca Media del Guadiana y Laderas Vertientes”. Porzuna is also considered an area of importance for the Spanish imperial eagle, vultures, storks and the Iberian lynx. The river landscape and biodiversity complement the geological focus around Cerro de los Santos.

Archaeology and Rural History

The Museo Arqueológico de Porzuna is located at Calle Toledo 28, next to the Casa de la Cultura. It covers approximately 140 square metres and spans two floors. The basement explores Porzuna’s origins in the Lower and Middle Palaeolithic. Exhibits include Acheulean and Mousterian hand axes, cleavers and scrapers.

Schools, institutes and associations can also visit the Museo Arqueológico outside regular opening hours by prior appointment. Arrange your visit before travelling. The Museo Etnográfico is housed in the municipality’s former silo. Its traditional objects, tools and household items illustrate rural life in Porzuna and the surrounding area. The two museums thus have different focuses: early history and archaeological finds on the one hand, and everyday life and the rural way of life on the other.

Historical traces can also be found in the Sierra del Cerrajón: remains of a fortified Castro are located there, and ceramics from the Bronze Age and later cultures have also been found. The Ermita de la Cruz de Mayo is in the Sierra de la Cruz de Mayo, which can be reached by a path.

Architectural History and Local Traditions

The Iglesia Parroquial de San Sebastián Mártir dates from the 18th century and was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in 1993. Its features include reddish volcanic stone, Gothic architecture and an intricately carved wooden choir. Visits are possible outside service times; arrange access locally before your visit.

The Corpus Christi de Porzuna features twelve dancers accompanied by guitars, lutes, bandurrias and castanets. Horse riders with magnificently decorated horses, as well as the songs “Los Buenos Días” and the Fandango de Porzuna, are also part of the tradition. Another cultural landmark is Nychos’s Titanes installation “The Pillar of Unified Love” in Porzuna. It depicts a skeleton as a symbol of universal love.

Hiking and Regional Cuisine

The 20-kilometre PR-CR11 hiking trail runs between Porzuna and Alcolea de Calatrava, and can also be walked in the opposite direction. It passes through areas shaped by volcanic features and landscapes and is signposted by the provincial government. Check trail conditions and local signage before setting out. The PR-CR11 provides a different route option from the direct ascent to the summit of Cerro de los Santos.

Traditional Porzuna dishes include Gachas, Migas manchegas, Caldereta de cordero, Manchego cheese and Pisto manchego. Wine from La Mancha, Flores manchegas and Rosquillas round out the selection. These dishes and products give regional food culture its own place in your travel plans, alongside volcanic landscapes, museum visits and architectural history.
