Campo de Criptana brings together the windmill heritage of the Sierra de los Molinos and Cerro de la Paz with museums, a historic cave dwelling and the landscape of La Mancha. A seasonal lagoon and regional wine and food culture are also among the themes you can consider when choosing your destination. The attractions offer different perspectives: from the technology of traditional milling to local history, birdlife and regional specialities.

Windmills and Heritage

The windmill complex on the Sierra de los Molinos and Cerro de la Paz is protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural) and a historic site. The Centro de Interpretación del Molino Manchego offers an insight into mill technology, covering different types of windmills, how they work and their machinery. Molino Burleta retains its original mechanisms and structure. Traditional milling can be observed at one of the historic windmills on the first Sunday of each month. In July, August and September, the demonstrations instead take place on the first Saturday evening; check the dates before your trip.

From the Sierra de los Molinos, the view stretches across the plain of La Mancha. The windmills therefore represent not only a technical subject, but also the landscape in which they stand. If you are particularly interested in how they are built, the exhibits on types, mechanics and machinery provide further insight into how they work. Burleta, in turn, retains its original structure and mechanisms.

Museums and Local History

The Sara Montiel Museum is housed in Molino Culebro. It displays personal belongings and items from the actress and singer’s career. Molino Quimera houses a museum featuring miniature reconstructions of Campo de Criptana’s Holy Week processions. Holy Week is recognised as a festival of regional tourist interest. The two windmill museums thus focus on different cultural subjects: a public figure and a local religious tradition.

The original building of the Pósito Real dates back to the 16th century and served as an agricultural grain bank. Today, it is also Campo de Criptana’s town museum and features a permanent archaeological exhibition. The Museo Eloy Teno also showcases art: its selection of works by the sculptor is inspired by Cervantes. Together, these places offer insights into architectural history, archaeology and artistic interpretations of literature.

Cave Dwelling and Routes

The Casa-Cueva de La Pastora Marcela retains its original form and conveys what domestic life was like in the past in the AlbaicĂn Criptano. Guided visits last around 20 minutes; tickets must be purchased at the Oficina de Turismo. This visit differs from the windmill and museum themes because it focuses on a historic form of housing and everyday life. One walking route is listed as 4.2 kilometres, with an estimated walking time of about one hour. From the town centre, there is also a round trip of about 20 kilometres to Laguna de Salicor. It follows well-maintained minor roads without using the main road and is described as not very difficult. The two route descriptions differ both in length and in the practical details provided.

Laguna de Salicor and Birdlife

Laguna de Salicor is a seasonal, saline, endorheic wetland. It was designated a nature reserve in 2000, is part of the La Mancha HĂşmeda wetlands and has been designated a Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA). Large concentrations of cranes gather there during migration. Other steppe and wading birds include little bustards, sandgrouse, stone-curlews and great bustards; sightings may vary by season. The lagoon therefore offers a different connection with nature from the heritage sites in town.

Wine and Regional Specialities

A wine museum is housed in Molino Inca Garcilaso. Its exhibitions cover the history of wine, wine from Campo de Criptana and the D.O. La Mancha. Two traditional specialities are mentioned as examples of local food culture: Cordiales, a sweet treat, and Titos, toasted almortas seasoned with salt and paprika. These culinary themes complement the museum and landscape attractions, without presuming that there is a particular place to sample them.

For orientation, the local tourism portal also offers an organised one-day route through Campo de Criptana, covering the town’s main attractions. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus on windmill technology, museums, the cave dwelling or nature. The seasonal traditional milling programme and the different route details may also help you decide.
