The travel profile of Villarrubia De Los Ojos ranges from hiking routes and wetlands to buildings from various periods. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay here, the route lengths and the different natural and cultural themes provide practical guidance for planning your trip.

Hiking routes for different time budgets

The first section of the Camino Natural del Guadiana is 19.6 kilometres long, takes around four hours on average and is classified as easy. It runs from Villarta de San Juan to the Pozas de los Alpargateros in Villarrubia de los Ojos and is suitable for hiking or cycling. Check local conditions before setting out.

At nine kilometres and around two hours, the Sendilla de la Virgen is the shorter of the two routes described. Its difficulty ranges from easy to moderate; hiking and cycling are also possible here. It runs along the southern foothills of the Sierra de Villarrubia and passes hills known as “morras”, which are associated with Bronze Age settlements. The route also takes in the medieval settlement of Xetar and the historic Camino de los volanderos or veladores.

The details help you compare the time required: around four hours on average are given for the first Camino section, and around two for the Sendilla. The difficulty ratings also differ: easy for the Camino section, and easy to moderate for the Sendilla. This lets you compare the two routes based on their stated duration and rating.

River landscape and wetlands

Parque Recreativo Gigüela is a recreational area of more than 140,000 m² on the riverbank, one kilometre from the town centre. It can be reached on foot, by bicycle or by car. There are paths and trails along the river, picnic areas and small footbridges over the Gigüela. The park is part of the Gigüela ecological corridor, which is connected to wetlands around Tablas de Daimiel and the Lagunas y Albardinales del Gigüela nature reserve.

The Las Charcas Observatory is also part of the nature theme: it is 2.5 kilometres from the town centre and consists of two facilities for observing birds and the landscape. In the area of Villarrubia de los Ojos, the Guadiana rises at the Ojos del Guadiana, a natural outlet of aquifer 23; water conditions may vary. Some of the wetlands within the municipality are included in Parque Nacional de Las Tablas de Daimiel. Much of the Sierras of Villarrubia de los Ojos is protected as part of the Red Natura 2000 network.

Buildings and local history

Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is a 16th-century church built on the site of the former castle. Its Late Gothic building comprises a single-nave church, a polygonal apse, a ribbed vault and stone buttresses. Torre del Reloj was built in 1891: architect Sebastián Rebollar constructed it from brick in the Neo-Mudéjar style to house the town clock.

Museo Etnográfico San Isidro is housed in a restored former municipal slaughterhouse dating from 1904. It presents local economic activities and the equipment used for them in a historical sequence from prehistory to the mid-20th century. Santuario Virgen de la Sierra comprises a white, single-nave chapel integrated into an elongated, two-storey courtyard complex with living quarters.

The Santuario is generally open during daylight hours; the chapel’s small religious museum can be visited on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Check opening arrangements before travelling.

Annual festivities

Two Romerías take place around the Santuario, combining religious observances with popular festivities: one on the third Sunday in May and one on Easter Monday. The exact dates depend on the liturgical calendar. Semana Santa in Villarrubia de los Ojos is recognised as a festival of regional tourist interest; local brotherhoods continue their procession tradition each year. Dates and programmes vary.
