When looking for a hotel in Pedro Muñoz, it helps to have a clear focus: would you like to devote your stay mainly to wetlands and birdwatching, architectural history or the customs celebrated in May? These themes give you specific ideas to help plan your visit.

Lagoons and birdwatching

The Complejo Lagunar de Pedro Muñoz is designated both a Biosphere Reserve and a Special Protection Area for Birds. Its ecological character includes unique plant communities adapted to saline habitats and one of the finest waterbird communities in the Mancha Húmeda. There are observation points in the area for studying and watching birdlife. Another way to learn about the wetland and its birds is to visit the Centro de Interpretación El Humedal de Don Quijote, which uses interactive panels and videos and offers guided visits with the chance to observe wild birds.

The routes differ in the features described: the Senda de la Laguna del Pueblo is a circular route that starts and ends at the Centro de Interpretación. Viewpoints are used to watch wetland birds. The Ruta de la Malvasía, by contrast, follows the shore of the Laguna del Pueblo for approximately three kilometres. Check the trail conditions and signage locally. For orientation, the CM-3103 starts in Pedro Muñoz and connects several of the lagoons.

The town’s architectural history

The Iglesia parroquial de San Pedro Apóstol stands in Plaza de España, in the historic centre. This late Renaissance building was constructed between 1699 and 1718; its tower was built in 1721. The Ermita de la Virgen del Buen Parto, also known as the Ermita de San Miguel, dates back to an earlier period: it was built between 1690 and 1695. Casa de la Paca is another historic building; this manor house features a large stone doorway and a large noble coat of arms.

Archaeological and cultural connections also shape the town’s history. The Yacimiento arqueológico del Cerro de las Nieves preserves remains of Pedro Muñoz’s first inhabitants from late prehistory, particularly the Late Bronze Age and Iron Age. The Puente de San Miguel dates from the 14th century and is linked to a historic transhumance route. Together, these sites span the period from prehistory to routes associated with transhumant pastoralism.

Experience the May traditions

The Ronda del Mayo Manchego was declared an intangible Bien de Interés Cultural on 9 April 2024. During the Ronda, participants walk through the streets on the night of 30 April to 1 May, singing the traditional “Mayo” to the town’s young women. The designation thus recognises the tradition, which has a specific date and a shared way of celebrating.

Los Mayos begins in the early afternoon of 1 May with a procession from Plaza de España to the Plaza de Toros, involving more than 500 people. The Fiesta del Mayo also features a tasting of typical products from Pedro Muñoz as part of a gastronomic presentation. The schedule may vary from year to year.

Collections, milling technology and wine

The Quixote Box houses the Cervantine Zunzunegui Collection, with 845 items, including books and various objects related to Don Quijote and Miguel de Cervantes. The collection includes editions in more than 30 languages. The Antigua Fábrica de Harinas offers a different glimpse into the town’s history: it preserves the complete, very well-maintained factory machinery, including machines from 1860. Visits are possible by prior appointment through the tourism office; confirm the visiting arrangements before your trip.

Winery tours and wine experiences are also among the options mentioned. Bodega San Isidro de Pedro Muñoz offers guided tours; Bodegas Viña Obdulia offers tours and wine-tasting courses. Bodegas Bernal García Chicote includes the barrel room, laboratory and ageing room in its tours. Bodegas Mº Luisa Rodríguez Huertas offers wine tastings on its premises. If you plan a tour or tasting, it is advisable to confirm the visiting arrangements in advance.
