San Carlos Del Valle: Plaza Mayor and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in San Carlos Del Valle
San Carlos Del Valle offers two distinct highlights: the architecture of Plaza Mayor and the Iglesia del SantĂsimo Cristo del Valle, as well as outdoor activity along the Camino de los Contrabandistas route. You can get to know the town through its architecture and history or combine your stay with a circular walking or cycling route. Plaza Mayor is open to the public and can be visited; plan your visit according to local access regulations.
Plaza Mayor: layout, galleries, and entrances
Plaza Mayor was built between 1713 and 1729 as part of the Castilian tradition of arcaded squares with wooden galleries. Its layout is an irregular rectangle. The square is 53 metres long and 21 metres wide at the centre; Tuscan columns support the galleries. The paving is also carefully laid out: rounded stones sit within large square borders of regularly hewn ashlar. Three of the entrances originally formed by arches remain; there is also an additional entrance through the Lonjilla. As you explore, you can look at both the gallery construction and the paving pattern.
Iglesia del SantĂsimo Cristo del Valle and Casa Grande
The Iglesia del SantĂsimo Cristo del Valle takes the form of an imposing cube with four corner towers and a large dome. Construction began on 18 September 1713 and ended on 13 September 1729. In 1993, the church was declared a protected cultural asset, Bien de InterĂ©s Cultural, in the Monument category. Another façade features a Churrigueresque bas-relief of Santiago Matamoros. Four figures are placed at the corners and, according to tradition, are believed to be portraits of the builders. When viewing the church, you can take in its overall form as well as its details—from the dome and towers to the relief and figures.
During your visit to the square, you can also admire the preserved courtyard architecture of the Casa Grande de la HospederĂa. It includes a corridor and a well. The building was once an inn: travellers between Andalusia and Castile, as well as visitors to the Santo Cristo, would stop there to rest or spend the night. This former use is part of the house’s history; the preserved courtyard architecture also offers a tangible glimpse of its structural details.
Landscape and circular route
San Carlos Del Valle lies between the Sierra de Alhambra and the Sierra Cristo-Bailones. Nearby peaks include Cerro Gordo and the cerro del Cristo; they reach heights of around 1,010 metres and offer sweeping views of the surrounding area. San Carlos Del Valle is also part of the Viaje por la DO Valdepeñas tourist route.
The De San Carlos del Valle al camino de los Contrabandistas route is a 10-kilometre circular trail for walking or cycling. It passes olive groves and vineyards and leads to the ruins of the old watermill known as Molino del Blanquillo. Approximate journey times are given as 1 hour 40 minutes on foot and 30 minutes by bicycle. This allows you to compare the estimated times for the two modes of transport; check the route’s seasonal conditions before setting out.
Festivals and local traditions
Recurring festivals may also play a part in planning your visit. The main festival in honour of the SantĂsimo Cristo del Valle takes place from 12 to 15 September. A procession is held on 14 September, attended by worshippers and tourists. The Semana Cultural in honour of Santa Elena runs from 12 to 18 August and includes cultural and religious activities.
Las Hogueras takes place every year on 7 December: residents light fires throughout the town, as well as a large bonfire in Plaza de la Ermita. The San-Marcos-RomerĂa includes communal hornazo meals outside San Carlos Del Valle. Annual festival programmes may vary; check the specific dates and arrangements for the event you wish to attend.
