El Cristo Del Espíritu Santo: Sanctuary and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in El Cristo Del Espíritu Santo
El Cristo Del Espíritu Santo is a hamlet where the Santuario del Santísimo Cristo del Espíritu Santo is located. Two distinct themes are central when choosing this destination: art and archaeological traces around the sanctuary, and the marked route to Piedralá.
Art and History at the Sanctuary
The dome above the presbytery of the Ermita del Santísimo Cristo del Espíritu Santo is decorated with oil paintings. They depict Saint Teresa of Ávila, Mary Magdalene, Saint Pantaleon, and Saint Francis of Assisi. The figure of Christ, Cristo del Espíritu Santo, is also associated with the sanctuary: Madrid sculptor Faustino Sanz Herranz created it in the 1960s; it is incorporated into a Baroque altarpiece. The figure and altarpiece bring together different artistic periods.
Another work of art is the 17th-century Ecce Homo painting from the Toledo school. It is considered the only surviving portrait of the first lords of Malagón. A Roman votive altar to the god Mars is also located in the sanctuary courtyard. The paintings, sculpture, and altar thus offer insight into religious art and earlier history, with these works spanning more than one period.
Archaeological Traces and Patron Saint Festivals
The nearby Cruz del Cristo site is of historical and archaeological importance. A Visigothic necropolis with stone sarcophagi and grave goods was discovered there in the 1990s. The finds are now kept at the Museo Provincial de Ciudad Real. The La Cruz del Cristo necropolis is considered a rural Visigothic cemetery. Remains of walls found beneath the Templete de la Cruz are interpreted as a possible 6th-century basilica; access for visitors to the display may be limited.
The patron saint festivals also shape the year: Every year, the figure of Cristo del Espíritu Santo is carried in a procession from the sanctuary to Malagón and then brought back in a popular romería. The dates vary. If you would like to plan your trip around this tradition, check the festival dates before making your plans.
Hiking or Mountain Biking to Piedralá
The route between El Cristo del Espíritu Santo and Piedralá starts at the Santuario del Santísimo Cristo del Espíritu Santo. It is marked as a short-distance hiking trail (Sendero de Pequeño Recorrido) and signposted with yellow-and-white trail markers. The valley can be explored on foot or by mountain bike. The route follows the Molinos and Carrizo streams through Mediterranean vegetation, cultivated valleys, and pastureland. Check trail conditions and markings before setting out.
After around three kilometers, the route reaches the Embalse del arroyo de los Molinos. At the end of the reservoir, an extensive carpet of ferns grows, turning an intense green in spring—especially after winter rains and before the summer heat. The route to the hamlet of Piedralá is about 13.5 kilometers one way; the walking time is given as approximately three and a half hours. This information helps distinguish the shorter detour to the reservoir from the longer route to the destination. Griffon vultures and Spanish imperial eagles may be spotted along the route. Sightings vary by season and are not guaranteed.
Nature Highlights in the Municipality of Malagón
The Navas de Malagón are also located in the municipality of Malagón: three volcanic lakes that hold water seasonally and are suitable for birdwatching. The lagoons are designated as a nature reserve, a Site of Community Importance (SCI), and a Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA). They offer another nature-focused highlight alongside the route to Piedralá. Water levels and access may change; before visiting, check the applicable rules and access conditions as well.
