Get to know Santa Cruz de Mudela through its historic buildings, recurring festival traditions and hiking trails. When planning your stay, you can choose between visits with different focuses and routes of varying lengths.

Churches and architectural history

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción was built in the 16th century in the late Gothic style, with Renaissance elements. In 1993, it was designated a Bien de Interés Cultural. The church is open to visitors; plan your visit according to local regulations.

The Ermita Santa María la Mayor played a different historical role: it was the first religious building erected in Santa Cruz de Mudela and originally served as a parish church. Its significance in the town’s history sets it apart from the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, whose construction period and style are clearly identified.

Las Virtudes: sanctuary and bullring

The Paraje y Santuario de Las Virtudes lies six to seven kilometres southeast of Santa Cruz de Mudela. It is set in a small valley surrounded by woodland and watered by the Arroyo de la Virgen. The complex includes the Santuario and the Plaza de Toros de Las Virtudes. The square bullring was built between 1641 and 1645 and is considered one of the oldest in Spain still in operation.

The Santuario also contains art-historical details: the Ermita de Las Virtudes preserves a Mudejar roof structure from the 15th century. The Camarín de la Virgen, dating from 1699, contains paintings attributed to Antonio Palomino. Visitor services and guided tours are available at the complex. Independent visits to the Plaza de Toros and the Santuario are free; a guided tour also includes the Camarín. Check current local regulations before your visit.

Festivals throughout the year

The Romería de Nuestra Señora María de las Virtudes takes place on 8 September. After a Mass at dawn, the procession heads to the Santuario de las Virtudes. As details of the annual programme may change, it is advisable to check the dates and schedule in advance.

Corpus Christi and Holy Week also shape the local festival traditions. For Corpus Christi, several streets are decorated with shade sails and carpets made of sawdust and salt; many residents also set up altars. The Holy Week processions are organised by four brotherhoods of the Passion. The celebrations combine religious observances with visible decorations around town; programmes may vary from year to year.

Hiking trails and traces of past use

The PR-CR 83 Sendero de la Noria Olaya is an open circular trail, 10.87 kilometres long and of moderate difficulty. Trail conditions can change, so check the latest information before setting out. The Noria Olaya area also contains remains of Bronze Age structures. The Noria Olaya hiking route runs through the surrounding area.

A longer option is the Ruta de Don Quijote – Etapa 3, which covers 47 kilometres and includes Santa Cruz de Mudela, Viso del Marqués and Almuradiel. It can be completed on foot, on horseback or by bicycle. Alongside the shorter circular trail, this offers a considerably longer route with several ways to travel. It is advisable to check route conditions before setting off.

The Noria Olaya area also contains archaeological remains of a qanat, consisting of underground galleries for collecting water. Its origin is thought to be possibly Roman or Arab. These traces give the area an archaeological dimension alongside its hiking, although their origin has not been definitively established.

Landscape, wine route and crafts

The municipal area belongs to the ZEPA Áreas Esteparias del Campo de Montiel and is considered important for the Spanish imperial eagle, cinereous vulture, black stork and Iberian lynx. If you are including nature-related activities in your plans, check current conservation information.

Santa Cruz de Mudela is one of five municipalities on the Ruta del Vino de Valdepeñas. The others are Valdepeñas, Moral de Calatrava, Torrenueva and San Carlos del Valle. The town’s connection to the wine route offers another perspective on the region without equating the character of the other places with that of Santa Cruz de Mudela. Knife-making is part of the local craft heritage: the well-known knives of Santa Cruz de Mudela are still made by hand there.
