Galdakao brings together hiking routes, architecture and culture in a clearly defined travel destination. The Ibaizabal flows through Galdakao; the municipality also has signposted and marked hiking trails, as well as named architectural and cultural sites. If you are looking for a hotel in Galdakao, you can start by planning your stay around your main interest: are you primarily looking for a longer mountain hike, distinctive architecture, or culture and a specific festival date? The routes and cultural sites offer different points of reference for your plans.

Hiking routes with different destinations

Several hiking trails in the municipality of Galdakao were signposted and marked under an agreement between the municipality and Ganguren Mendi Taldea. The Ruta Ganguren is 14.9 kilometres long. It starts in Aperribai, passes through Elorritxueta and reaches the summit of Ganguren. The Ruta Upo Tontorrandi is a 12.6-kilometre mountain hiking trail. It starts at the Lekuebaso recreation area and climbs from there to Mount Upo. The routes differ in length by 2.3 kilometres. They also start at different places and lead to different summit destinations. When choosing a hike, you can therefore take both the stated distance and the destination into account.

Architecture and distinctive local landmarks

Galdakao Town Hall, on Gurutzeko Plaza, dates from the mid-18th century. El Gallo is a distinctive monument in Galdakao, in Urgoiti, and stands at a road junction on the route towards Donostia and Gasteiz. The two buildings are associated with different locations: the town hall with Gurutzeko Plaza, and El Gallo with the neighbourhood of Urgoiti and the junction towards the cities mentioned above.

Two bridges can also be distinguished by their design. Bengoetxe has a humpback bridge with four arches in the Romanesque style. In the neighbourhood of Plazakoetxe, there is a stone Renaissance bridge with three arches. The bridge in Bengoetxe is described by its profile, number of arches and Romanesque classification; in Plazakoetxe, the defining features are its stone construction, three arches and Renaissance style. The two structures thus offer different architectural points of reference within Galdakao.

Cultural programme and festival date

Torrezabal Kultur Etxea is a versatile municipal theatre venue that hosts performing arts productions. It is also Galdakao’s cinema. Specific performances, screenings and events may vary over time. If you would like to include Torrezabal in your plans, check the programme for your stay.

An annual event is the festival in honour of Saint Ignatius of Loyola: it is celebrated every year on 31 July in the neighbourhood of Tximelarre. For planning purposes, this means there is a fixed annual date, while the specific offerings in the cultural programme vary over time. If you are planning your visit around a cultural event, you can compare the festival date directly with Torrezabal’s programme schedule.
