When looking for a hotel in Kurtzea, the local routes, squares and buildings can help give your stay some structure. Two routes start at Kurtzeko Plaza; the town hall and frontón are also located on the square. Comparing route lengths provides a concrete reference point for planning your day, while the destinations described offer different points of interest.

Walking Routes Starting from Kurtzeko Plaza

Two routes of different lengths start at Kurtzeko Plaza: the Kukuzburu route is 10.9 km long, and the Travesía por el Ganguren is 18.4 km. The difference is 7.5 km. If you are choosing between the two, their lengths provide a concrete first point of comparison; the destinations described for each can then help guide your decision.

The Kukuzburu route leads to the iron-rich spring of Uraburu and descends to the Elorritxueta recreational area. In addition to the summit of Kukuzburu, you can see several bunkers belonging to the Línea P military defence line, which was built after the 1936 war. The local landmarks therefore include both natural features and a point of historical interest.

The Travesía por el Ganguren gives you the opportunity to walk the entire Ganguren ridge and reaches the summit of Kukuzburu. Together with its length, this gives it a different route profile from the Kukuzburu route as described. Check trail conditions before setting out, as they can change.

Town Hall, Church and Frontón

Galdakao Town Hall stands on Kurtzeko Plaza. It was built in the mid-18th century and is regarded as a Baroque town hall from that period. If you start either route from the square, the town hall is already at your starting point; its architectural history adds a specific historical period to the connection with the place.

The Church of Santa María de Galdakao dates from a later period: it was built in 1896 and is located in the La Cruz neighbourhood. La Cruz is the Spanish name associated with Kurtzea. The town hall and church thus offer two distinct historical points of interest: a Baroque town hall from the mid-18th century and a church from the late 19th century.

The Kurtzea frontón is also located on Kurtzeko Plaza. Training sessions take place there from Monday to Thursday; games are scheduled for Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. If you would like to time your visit around training sessions or games, check the schedule in advance, as activities may change.
