Barakaldo offers a range of ways to explore nature and culture: trails along the river and through the karst, green spaces, gardens, and architectural and industrial history. There are also cultural and event venues.

Trails through river landscapes, karst and green spaces

The two PR trails differ in their routes and focus. The PR®-BI 210 starts in the Gorostitza neighbourhood and follows the Castaños River to the Gorostitza reservoir. The PR®-BI 101, by contrast, is a circular route with scenic appeal and natural-history interest.

The PR®-BI 101 crosses the limestone karst of Haitz Zurietako and connects several chapels with a pilgrimage tradition. In the section within Barakaldo, it runs along the Larrazabalgo galtzada, past the Agate Deunaren baseliza and through the Haitz-Zuriak karst.

Malla Verde is a network of walking and cycling paths connecting urban and suburban green spaces in Barakaldo. There is also a reservoir in the El Regato neighbourhood, with a greenway featuring benches and fountains running around it.

Green spaces and historic sites

The Jardín Botánico Ramón Rubial de Barakaldo is located in the city and is a living museum where vegetation becomes art. In 2026, the municipal Barakaldo Natura Basatia programme uses Barakaldo’s natural surroundings for sport, environmental education and citizen participation.

The garden at Finca Munoa contains 652 trees and 100 shrubs of various species. Organised groups can request a botanical visit to learn about the plants and garden features. Availability must be confirmed.

The CIHMA is located in El Regato, an interpretive and exhibition centre in a well-preserved rural natural setting. There, you can find information about Barakaldo’s history, cultural heritage and environment.

The Palacio Munoa was transformed into a mansion in the style of the French Second Empire. The Cargaderos de Mineral of Orkonera and Franco-Belga offer a different historical perspective: they bear witness to Barakaldo’s industrial past. Architectural history and industrial heritage therefore stand side by side as distinct themes.

Culture and events

Bizkaia Arena is Hall 4 of the Bilbao Exhibition Centre and can host sporting, theatrical and musical events for up to 20,000 spectators. Teatro Barakaldo offers numerous events and activities throughout the year. The two venues thus differ both in their stated uses and in their specified capacity: the arena’s capacity is given as a precise figure, while the theatre’s year-round programme of events is emphasised.

If you would like to plan your trip around an event, check the dates in advance. This will help you plan your stay around the cultural and event venues that interest you.
