Lekeitio’s coastal landscape combines significant Gothic buildings with a traditional maritime ensemble of houses and expansive beaches. In the historic center, palaces, tower houses, hermitages and former sailors’ homes are part of the townscape. This brings together different aspects of the town: a diverse historic center, a maritime character and an open coastal landscape. If you choose Lekeitio as a destination for a hotel stay, these highlights can help you shape your trip around what interests you most locally.

Old Town, Harbor and Architectural History

Former sailors’ homes connect the historic center with its maritime character, while palaces, tower houses and hermitages reveal other facets of the townscape. Advance appointments with the tourism office are required for guided tours of the old town. The “Lekeitio marinero” experience includes an audio-guided visit through the old town and harbor. The two options differ in format and scope: the guided tour focuses on the old town, while the audio experience also includes the harbor. If you want to focus your time on particular subjects, this distinction is useful for planning.

Lighthouse and Island

Santa Catalina Lighthouse is an interpretation center for navigation technology. Historically, it was the first lighthouse in the Basque Country open to visitors. If you are planning a visit, check the current regulations beforehand.

San Nicolás, also called Garraitz, is a small island covered with pine trees and without buildings or other structures. The remains of an old hermitage have been preserved there. The island combines scenic and historical aspects: the pine trees define its appearance, while the remains of the hermitage connect it to its earlier history. This makes it a different highlight from the architecture in the historic center.

Festive Traditions and Trails

The San Pedro festivities take place in late June. They include Kaxarranka, a traditional dance in which the dancer dances on a chest carried by eight sailors. The image of the dancer, chest and eight bearers gives this festive tradition a distinctive feature. If you want to plan your trip around the festivities, check the current event dates.

A trail starts beside the Basilica of Santa María and leads to the end of Dendari Street. From there, it climbs uphill alongside a cemetery. The route connects a named starting point and a stretch along a street with a subsequent climb; this sequence gives you a sense of direction when planning the trail. Trail conditions may change, so check them before setting out.

Practical Information

Coming from Gernika, there are two signposted free car parks, designated P2 and P3. From there, the town center is about a 15-minute walk away. As parking regulations may change, check the current situation before setting off. There are parking options in town at Isuntza Beach; availability may vary by season.
