Bubión offers a range of ways to enjoy a stay focused on architecture, history and landscape. Steep streets and stepped houses with flat slate roofs define the town; their design is adapted to the terrain. Trails, museums and traditional festivals also give visitors different ways to explore.

Architecture and Trails in Bubión

Traditional architecture can be seen in the steep streets and stepped houses with their flat slate roofs. Royal Decree 3237/1982 declared Bubión a Historic and Artistic Site. This means the town is recognized as part of the cultural heritage not only for its individual buildings, but also for its historic architectural character as a whole.

Two distinct trail references are described for planning your walks: Sendero 6 passes through Barrio Hondo de Bubión and Plaza de la Iglesia. Ruta del río Poqueira is one of the routes and trails that start in Bubión. Check trail conditions and directions locally before planning your route.

History, Crafts and Museums

The history of Bubión’s church includes several major events: it was burned down during the Morisco Rebellion and almost completely rebuilt after the 1804 earthquakes. Ermita de San Antonio stands on the right bank of Barranco del Cerezo. The site was probably a place of worship as far back as the Muslim period.

Alguastar preserves remains of Bubión’s original settlement from the late Middle Ages, including tombs from the Muslim period. Horno de Nade also reflects the area’s craft history: the traditional oven dates from the early 20th century and retains all its original features.

Museo Casa Alpujarreña is housed in a traditional two-story home and displays more than 500 objects relating to traditional local life. Museo de la Agricultura de Bubión showcases elements of traditional agriculture in La Alpujarra. Its building was constructed in the traditional style; outside, the museum includes a threshing machine and an old tractor. It is next to Eras de Bubión. If a museum visit is important to your travel plans, check opening hours locally.

Taller del Telar is also part of the area’s craft heritage. Housed in a restored traditional home, it contains two fully operational looms. Eras de Bubión lie below the town center, in the direction of the river, and offer expansive views across the valley.

Landscape and Natural Features

A large part of Bubión’s municipal area belongs to the Historic Site of the Poqueira Gorge. A large part of Bubión’s municipal area belongs to Sierra Nevada National Park. North of the town center lies Cascada del Tejar, a waterfall about 20 meters high with two tiers. Its flow varies with the seasons. The height is approximate; the waterfall combines a specific description of the landscape with a natural feature that changes seasonally.

Puente del Tejar is also north of Bubión, in a gorge on a mid-slope. Riparian vegetation, including old, large chestnut trees and poplars, grows alongside terraced fields. The waterfall, bridge and Eras offer different ways to experience the landscape: the watercourse, the gorge with its vegetation and cultivation, and the views across the valley below the town center.

Traditions and Travel Planning

Mauraca, also known as the Chestnut Festival, and Chisco de San Antón are Bubión traditions. Fiestas de San Sebastián take place in mid-August and end with a procession followed by the burning of the figure on a cart called “Entierro de la Zorra,” which is filled with fireworks. If you would like to plan your stay around this festival, check the dates and program locally before your trip.

When looking for a hotel in Bubión, you can first decide which themes matter to you: the town’s architecture and history, museums and crafts, trails or landscape. Festival dates and museum visits require different planning from a stay focused mainly on the town and its surroundings. This can help you choose travel dates that suit your interests without reducing Bubión’s many facets to a single excursion destination.
