Guejar Sierra
Accommodation in Guejar Sierra
Güéjar-Sierra offers two themed approaches to planning a trip: trails in the Sierra Nevada and a village setting with historic heritage. In the Sierra Nevada, the municipal area includes the Genil River basin, from its upper reaches to the foothills in the Vega de Granada. At the foot of the Sierra Nevada, the municipal area is also home to the Embalse de Canales, which holds water from the Genil. The two landscape descriptions refer to different scales: the basin extends from the upper reaches to the foothills of the Vega, while the Embalse refers to a specific reservoir. A river basin describes the landscape drained by a river; the Embalse, by contrast, is a particular reservoir whose water source here is the Genil.
Trails with different details
For hiking, three routes each have their own details. The Sendero Sulayr begins and ends within the municipal area of Güéjar-Sierra. The Vía Verde de Sierra Nevada starts in the village and runs for six kilometres along the Genil River to the Barranco de San Juan. The six-kilometre distance provides a specific planning reference. Conditions on the Vía Verde may vary; check them before your outing. The Verea de la Estrella begins at the Barranco de San Juan and ends at the Cueva Secreta; in the past, it was the route to the mines of La Estrella. The three descriptions emphasize different points: the Vía Verde’s six-kilometre distance and route along the Genil, the Verea’s former function and endpoint, and the Sulayr’s start and finish within the municipal area.
Architecture and cultural heritage
The history of the village includes a range of architectural and cultural heritage sites. The Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestra Señora del Rosario was built in the 17th century in the Renaissance style and is known for its wooden Mudéjar coffered ceiling and high-quality carvings. The style and ceiling serve different purposes: the Renaissance style classifies the church’s architecture, while the Mudéjar coffered ceiling describes a specific architectural feature. The remains of a historic fortress can be found on Cerro del Castillejo. The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de las Nieves and the Fuente de los Dieciséis Caños are also part of Güéjar-Sierra’s cultural heritage. Traditional tinaos are part of the village’s preserved mountain character.
Cherries and recurring festivals
The recurring festivals also offer different seasonal reasons to visit. The Gastronomic Cherry Days in Güéjar-Sierra celebrate Güejareña cherries and are an established summer event. The August fair is held in honour of San Roque; celebrations in honour of the Virgen del Rosario take place in October. Horse-ribbon races are a distinctive tradition at Güéjar-Sierra’s patron saint festivals. Summer, August, and October mark different time periods; check the specific event dates before your trip.
