Discover Moclín: Castillo, church art and trails
Accommodation in Moclín
Visitors choosing Moclín as a destination can focus on different interests: the defensive complex, sacred art, a cultural centre or trails through the countryside.
Castillo, Church and Culture
The Castillo de Moclín consists of two defensive sections: the outer walls and an alcazaba crowned by the Torre del Homenaje. The Castillo can be reached from the town centre via Calle Mota.
Below the Castillo, within the walled part of the town, the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación de Moclín was founded in 1501. The church houses the Santuario del Santísimo Cristo del Paño. It includes a 2.64 × 2.21 metre painting of Christ carrying the cross.
The Pósito de Moclín offers another cultural perspective. It is currently a cultural centre with ethnographic objects, and activities are also held there. The church and the Pósito have different cultural functions: the church houses sacred art, while the Pósito is currently a cultural centre with ethnographic objects and activities.
Gorge, Circular Trail and Pilgrimage Route
The Tajos de la Hoz is a steep-sided gorge carved by the Río Velillos. This is one aspect of Moclín’s landscape, distinct from the architecture of the Castillo and the church. If you are interested in walking trails, the Ruta del Gollizno PR-A84 is another option: it is a circular route that starts in either Moclín or Olivares, depending on the direction you take.
Moclín is also part of a stage of the Camino Mozárabe de Santiago. The Gollizno is a circular trail, whereas the Camino Mozárabe is a pilgrimage route.
Las Trincheras de Moclín combines a route with the history of the most recent war. Along the way, you can also take in the landscape from strategically located positions.
Trails and Getting Around
Las Trincheras is partly accessible by car. From there, a well-marked trail continues on foot for 5–10 minutes.
Suitable safety equipment is required to use the Vía Ferrata de La Solana. The route includes ladders anchored into the rock, suspension bridges and exposed sections. The Cueva del Goyino, meanwhile, can be reached on foot via a path that descends from Moclín through the Cañada de Corcuela.
The Mirador de Moclín is on the right-hand side of the N-432, shortly before the centre of Moclín when coming from the direction of Tiena, and has a small, safe car park.
